Perhaps more than any other match in the tournament, the all-Iberian clash between Portugal and Spain is the battle of young and old. While the Seleçao das Quinas have plenty of young talents and La Roja plenty of veterans, Portugal’s leading man is 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo and Spain’s 18-year-old Lamine Yamal. Yamal is the 12th-youngest player to participate in the 2026 World Cup; Ronaldo is the second-oldest.
Today’s 3 p.m. ET clash could be the last Portugal appearance of Ronaldo’s legendary career, as the striker announced yesterday that this would be his final World Cup. The winner will go on to face either the United States or Belgium in the quarterfinals.

90’+1: NEVER MIND ABOUT EXTRA TIME! MIKEL MERINO FINISHED WITH HIS LEFT FOOT FROM NEAR THE PENALTY SPOT AFTER A GREAT ASSIST BY FERRÁN! THE PORTUGUESE DEFENSE JUST LOST HIM, AS THEY WEREN’T PAYING ATTENTION AFTER THE FREE KICK WAS TAKEN QUICKLY! 1-0 SPAIN!
89′: Bernardo Silva just earned a yellow card for a hard challenge against Mikel Merino, the first card of this match! He hasn’t yet earned one in the knockouts, so he’s not in suspension jeopardy, but he can’t get another one in the quarterfinals (if the Seleçao das Quinas make it that far).
85′: Two changes now for Spain: Pedri is off for Fabián Ruiz, and Dani Olmo is off for Mikel Merino! Will this be the answer that leads to a winner?
83′: Now, Roberto Martínez will make his final two changes of regular time. Bernardo Silva and Francisco Conceição are now off, and surprisingly enough, Vitinha is coming off alongside Pedro Neto! Cristiano Ronaldo will at least start extra time!
81′: RAFAEL LEÃO, BEAUTIFUL SOLO RUN UP THE LEFT FLANK! LOOK AT THE SPEED!
79′: Yamal found Ferrán Torres near the near post, and he centered it across, but no Spanish player was there to tap it in! With some better awareness by Aymeric Laporte, that could’ve been a goal!
78′: Another situation in which Dani Olmo arguably waited too long to shoot! Rúben Dias managed to deflect it out for a Spain corner.
76′: Bruno Fernandes found the side netting after a fortuitous bounce saw him get some space away from Marc Cucurella in the right side of the 18-yard box! That was Portugal’s first shot in nearly 20 minutes.
75′: That was terrible by Yamal! He’d earned some space along the right sideline and Dani Olmo found him with a beautiful through ball, but his centering pass to Álex Baena was intercepted to end a great chance! Now, Baena has been taken off for Ferrán Torres!
73′: Lamine Yamal had earned a free kick near the right corner of the 18-yard box, and he slung it in well, but Diogo Costa was there for the save!
71′: The first substitutes of the game (excepting Mendes’ injury-related exit): Rafael Leão and Diogo Dalot are on, replacing João Cancelo and João Félix!
68′: The Seleçao das Quinas have consistently double-marked Yamal with Semedo and Félix every single time he’s touched the ball since Mendes’ injury, and so far, it’s worked! Can Spain use Yamal’s gravity to create shots for Baena and Oyarzabal? We’ll find out after the hydration break.
65′: Álex Baena just attempted a shot, but it was a low dribbler to Diogo Costa’s left that didn’t challenge him too much!
64′: So far, just four of La Roja’s 10 shots have come inside the box. Portugal’s defense has remained compact.
61′: Dani Olmo had a look from the left side of the 18-yard box, but he opted to center it for Pedri, and Renato Veiga recovered in time to center it over the bar! Olmo arguably should’ve shot that one!
59′: Another shot from Cristiano Ronaldo! João Félix’s pass towards the back post was a little bit too close to the end line, and Ronaldo’s volley went weakly into the side netting!
56′: This is a very bad development for the Seleçao das Quinas! Nuno Mendes went down trying to catch up to Lamine Yamal, and he’ll have to be substituted off. Nélson Semedo is on in his place.
51′: Pedro Neto made a great run down the right sideline and centered it towards the back post, but his pass went just in front of Ronaldo for what would’ve been a tap-in! Still 0-0.
50′: Yamal vs. Mendes. Advantage, Mendes, again!
48′: Free kick drawn by Cristiano Ronaldo! Dani Olmo dragged him down about 40 yards away from the goal. It’s unlikely that Bruno Fernandes or Nuno Mendes will go for goal from here, but…
46′: We’re back underway, and Portugal is in possession! Will either team find a winner, or will this be the first Round of 16 game to go to extra time?
HT: And that’s the midway point! So far, Spain 0, Portugal 0! La Roja have been better, managing eight shots worth 0.98 expected goals (three on target), and the Seleçao das Quinas have turned their five shots (two on target) into 0.26 expected goals. The state of the odds is about the same as it was at the start of the game; Spain is -185 to advance to the quarterfinals and Portugal +140. The possibility of extra time has risen to +160!
45’+2: The crowd rose in collective anticipation as Yamal got a touch inside the box, one-on-one with Diogo Costa, but the daylight between him and the rest of the defense was there for a reason; he was offsides.
45′: Another sloppy touch inside the box from Oyarzabal, and a terrible shot by Rodri that was still rising as it went over the bar!
43′: Lamine Yamal went down outside the box after a tackle from João Félix, but he didn’t try very hard to appeal for a whistle, as it was simply great defending by Félix and a bit of acting on the Barcelona man’s part. This is the biggest challenge that Spain has faced so far, and some of the best that the Seleçao das Quinas have played all tournament!
41′: OH, NUNO! He took it short and got it back, rocketing his left-footed shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box off the crossbar! No goal for Portugal, thanks solely to a great deflection by Pedro Porro!
37′: Another save against Cristiano Ronaldo! He was in excellent position right in the six-yard box to send home João Félix’s centering header, but his shot was popped up weakly, and Simón got to it with a dive.
36′: That was a bad touch in a dangerous position by Oyarzabal to end the chance! Oyarzabal’s form will be key — he had braces against both Saudi Arabia and Austria but stinkers against Cape Verde and Uruguay — and he already missed a huge chance earlier in this match.
35′: More good defense by Nuno Mendes to deny Lamine Yamal near the top right corner of the 18-yard box! Spain has definitely been better, but the 18-year-old hasn’t really been part of that!
30′: Just a great sliding block by Nuno Mendes on Pedro Porro’s cross. THIS IS WHY HE’S THE BEST LEFT-BACK IN THE WORLD!
29′: Ooh, that was an excellent play by Renato Veiga to stop the through ball headed towards Lamine Yamal at the edge of the box. Yamal hasn’t had too much involvement in this game so far, but that surely would’ve been a goal had the pass made it through.
23′: Hydration break time! Spain has been the better team so far, managing six shots worth 0.83 expected goals (a majority from that Oyarzabal miss) and putting three on target. Portugal is hanging around, putting one of its three shots on target.
20′: That was some of the best-looking offense by Portugal, as a series of nice passes led to a shot attempt by João Cancelo that went over the bar. It didn’t end up counting, as Bruno Fernandes was offsides in the build-up play, but still, that sort of fearless play should serve the Seleçao das Quinas well!
16′: There’s some nice end-to-end action! Nuno Mendes was fed a nice ball over the top, but Unai Simón got to it first! Then, Lamine Yamal timed his run well before Diogo Costa denied him, and Costa saved the rebounded effort from Álex Baena too!
12′: And there’s the first shot on target for Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo! After a Pedri turnover, Ronaldo got a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box, but he shot it right at Unai Simón! A well-timed run, even if not a good result. That’s just the fourth shot on target that Spain has allowed all tournament.
8′: SO FAR IT’S BEEN SPAIN WITH THE MAJORITY OF THE PRESSURE, AND IT REALLY SHOULD’VE BEEN 1-0! MIKEL OYARZABAL TIMED HIS RUN WELL, BUT HE MISSED WIDE OF THE FAR POST!
3′: Lamine Yamal just had his first touch of the game, but he couldn’t control it and it went out of bonds past the touch line. What a battle this could be between Yamal and Nuno Mendes!
1′: We have action in Dallas! At the end of this match, another top-10 team will have been eliminated from the World Cup!
