Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels prediction, pick for MLB on Sunday 7/05/26

By: Dan Johnson

Boston enters Sunday with a chance to turn a clean road weekend into a full Anaheim sweep. The Red Sox took the first two games 5-2 and 8-1, holding Los Angeles to three total runs. Boston is 7-3 over its last 10, with a .244 average, 3.30 ERA, and plus-eight run differential. The Angels have dropped five straight, sit 36-54, and own a .218 average with a minus-15 differential over that same stretch. Mike Trout remains out, Logan O’Hoppe’s head issue clouds the catcher spot, and Los Angeles enters another night needing Zach Neto and Josh Lowe to create most of the offense. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Red Sox vs. Angels prediction, preview

Ranger Suárez gives Boston the steadiest piece in the matchup. He enters at 4-3 with a 2.94 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts. His contact profile backs the surface, with 86.4 mph average exit velocity allowed, 31.5% hard-hit, 5.4% barrels, .272 wOBA, and .283 xwOBA. Suárez can work through sinkers, four-seamers, cutters, curves, and changeups, which helps him avoid one-plane mistakes. Ryan Johnson sits on the other side with a 7.40 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and only 18 strikeouts. His .321 xwOBA suggests some correction, but the 18.7-degree launch angle gives Boston a clear extra-base lane.

Willson Contreras is the Boston bat that changes the inning quickly. He owns a .285 average, 15 doubles, two triples, 19 homers, a .914 OPS, 90.4 mph average exit velocity, 46.5% hard-hit, 14.0% barrels, and a .383 xwOBA. Wilyer Abreu adds left-handed lift with 89.8 mph average exit velocity, 40.9% hard-hit, 11.1% barrels, and a .333 xwOBA. Romy Gonzalez has supplied a timely right-handed spark, going 3-for-4 Friday before homering Saturday. Ceddanne Rafaela brings speed and constant pressure, while Jarren Duran’s barrel rate keeps his damage path alive despite uneven results.

Los Angeles still has enough individual bats to make Suárez work. Neto is the Angels’ most dangerous shape, with 18 homers, 17 doubles, 11 steals, 12.8% barrels, and a 21.9-degree launch angle. Lowe is the current-form threat after going 10-for-27 with two doubles and two homers across his last 10. Jo Adell brings 90.1 mph average exit velocity and 44.3% hard-hit, while Jorge Soler can still punish a hanging pitch. Nolan Schanuel gives the lineup some traffic, but the larger problem remains depth. Without Trout, and with O’Hoppe uncertain, the lower half needs too much perfect sequencing.

Angels vs. Red Sox pick, best bet

The bullpen gap pushes this toward a full-game Boston position. The Red Sox bullpen has a 3.38 ERA across the previous seven days, with Aroldis Chapman giving Alex Cora a defined late-game endpoint. Chapman also set the all-time reliever strikeout record Friday while earning his 17th save. The Angels’ bullpen has a 6.75 ERA over that same recent window, and the bridge behind Johnson remains vulnerable. Kirby Yates can protect a clean lead, but Boston’s best scoring script attacks Johnson and the middle innings. Anaheim gives clean early hitting weather, then cooler late air, which supports a Boston-led scoring shape.

The market leaves Boston’s moneyline too expensive at -156. The first-five line at -115 is strong because Suárez owns a clear starter edge. The team total over 4.5 also makes sense, though Boston can win 4-2 and leave that ticket short. The better price-adjusted play is Red Sox -1.5 at +104, playable to -105. It captures Suárez’s run prevention, Johnson’s elevated contact, Boston’s active lineup, Trout’s absence, O’Hoppe uncertainty, and the Angels’ weaker bullpen bridge.

Best bet: Red Sox -1.5 +104.

Projected score: Red Sox 5, Angels 2.

Best bet: Red Sox -1.5 (+105) at Angels
