The Dodgers (57–31, 1st NL West) took Thursday’s series opener, 12–7, and have won eight of their last 10 games — including a series victory in San Diego. The Padres (43–43, 2nd NL West), meanwhile, have dropped six straight games and are now 2–5 this year against the defending champs.
Looking at the pitching probables, we’ve got San Diego right-hander Michael King (5–7, 3.55 ERA) taking on LA’s two-way superstar, Shohei Ohtani (8–2, 1.58 ERA).
First pitch is at 10:10 p.m. ET. The Dodgers enter as 1.5-run home favorites with -252 moneyline odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Padres are +203 underdogs, with the game total set at O/U eight runs.

San Diego Padres
Second-best is the pinnacle of achievement in a division ruled by the back-to-back defending champs. The Padres are approaching the All-Star break already a whopping 13 games behind the almighty Dodgers. And based on recent trends, that gap is only likely to widen.
San Diego is an MLB-worst 12–23 since May 24, dropping them to .500 and into a stalemate with the Diamondbacks in the NL West standings. While Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado are starting to heat up — the latter has launched three homers in his last five games, including two against the Dodgers — it hasn’t been enough to catalyze a turnaround. The Padres rank 28th in total runs scored during this lifeless stretch.
Meanwhile, San Diego’s run prevention effort has taken one giant leap in the wrong direction. The pitching staff has posted the fifth-worst ERA since May 24 (4.95) — their famously dominant bullpen struggling to compensate for the disastrous rotation. Mason Miller remains untouchable, having surrendered just one earned run since April 29. Still, multiple injuries have the beleaguered arm barn ranking in the bottom half of MLB in that span.
The Padres will hope for better results when they hand the ball to right-hander Michael King, who has posted a respectable 3.55 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 17 starts (96.1 IP) in 2026. Still, his underlying metrics — a 4.76 xERA and low strikeout numbers — raise some serious red flags. Friday will also be King’s third start against the Dodgers this season: he twirled seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts on May 18 before coughing up four earned runs in 4.1 frames in his last start on June 28.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers had dropped four straight games before Shohei Ohtani’s seven-inning shutout helped lift them over the Giants on May 13. And they never looked back. Los Angeles has gone 33–13 since, tops in MLB, and continues to get hotter — winning eight of its last 10 games.
Of course, LA’s league-best offense is fueled by Ohtani, who leads MLB with a 1.089 OPS since snapping an 11-game home run drought the night before his gem against San Francisco. It also doesn’t hurt that Mookie Betts has recaptured his MVP form, hitting a searing .375 since June 13 — recently going yard in three straight contests, twice against the Padres.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the two-way superstar is leading the charge on the other end, as well. Ohtani heads into Friday’s start ranking second in MLB with a 1.58 ERA (min. 50 IP). While he’s struggled a bit of late, he looked right at home in his last start against the Padres on May 20, delivering five spotless frames in a 4–0 win.

Let’s not overthink this. The Padres have been the worst team in baseball for well over a month, while the Dodgers continue to surge. Throw Ohtani on the mound, and you’ve got the recipe for another statement win from the defending champs.
