Athletics Team Total Over 5.5 Runs

Odds: -105 | Opponent: Miami Marlins

On the surface, this doesn’t look like a slam dunk matchup for the Athletics against starter Tyler Phillips. A quick look at his numbers shows he’s been serviceable in his outings both in the bullpen and as a starter. But, when you start peeling the onion, you’ll notice there are reasons to like the Athletics bats to come alive tonight. Phillips’ 3.02 ERA looks nice but not when it’s accompanied by an xERA of 4.43. He’s also been much worse on the road, where he has a 5.67 ERA, a .346 wOBA, and a 5.82 FIP. While he’s only allowed seven home runs, five of them have come on the road. Pitching in Sacramento won’t do him any favors tonight.

James Wood 2+ Total Bases

Odds: +100 | Opponent: Pittsburgh Pirates

Lefties for the Nationals are in a great spot against Pirates starter Mitch Keller. Against lefties, Keller owns a .344 wOBA with a 4.41 FIP and seven of the nine home runs he’s allowed. He faced the Nationals earlier this season and had a nightmare start, allowing five runs on six hits with four walks through just four innings of work, which tied for his shortest start of the season.

I was surprised to see that Wood was +100 to collect 2+ total bases tonight. He’s hitting for a ton of power with a .257 ISO and 43 extra base hits. He’s also hitting for plenty of power at home, posting a .257 ISO. It’s going to be a hot and humid night at Nationals Park with temperatures around 97 degrees and the wind blowing out. I’ll take this opportunity to take Wood at +100 to reach 2+ total bases.

Gerrit Cole Under 17.5 Outs Recorded

Odds: +107 | Opponent: Minnesota Twins

Cole has been shaky since his return from Tommy John surgery in May. His ERA and xERA aren’t bad at 4.06 and 3.60 but other stats are raising red flags for me. First, he’s allowing the highest fly ball rate of his career at 50%. Because of that, his HR/9 is also at a career-high 1.6. His two main pitches, a fastball and slider, aren’t fooling opposing hitters either. They’ve tagged his fastball for a .404 wOBA with a .350 ISO and his slider at a .522 wOBA and a .231 ISO. It’s been especially solid contact against his fastball with a 51% hard-hit rate. Tonight, he’ll face a Twins lineup that is excellent against both pitches.

The expected lineup for the Twins own a .381 wOBA and a .268 ISO against the fastball and a .389 wOBA with a .274 ISO against the slider. With Cole throwing these pitches a combined 56% of the time, they’ll have their opportunities to do some damage. This is why I’m looking for Cole to go under 17.5 outs, something he’s done in four of his seven starts, including each of his last two.
