Of the three teams thought to be inner-circle contenders before the tournament — Spain, France, and Argentina — La Roja have arguably been the least convincing, drawing with Cape Verde and needing a Fernando Muslera gaffe just to beat Uruguay. Still, Spain topped Group H comfortably ahead of the Blue Sharks, and it’ll enter this afternoon’s 3 p.m. ET matchup in Los Angeles against Austria in a good position to make a run through the tournament. Meanwhile, Das Team made a daring last-second escape to secure their place in the knockouts, finding a last-minute equalizer against Algeria to move on.
The winner will go on to face either Portugal or Croatia, who will face off later Thursday.

87′: Das Team have made their final substitution, as Stefan Posch has now gone off for Alexander Prass.
86′: That’s it for Yamal; Gavi has replaced him. The 18-year-old played a fantastic game, but he just couldn’t quite steer the ball into the back of the net.
85′: THAT WAS ALMOST A GOAL FOR LAMINE YAMAL! AFTER SOME BRILLIANT BUILD-UP PLAY, YAMAL FIRED A SHOT FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SIX-YARD BOX, BUT DAVID ALABA WAS THERE TO CLEAR IT OFF THE LINE!
83′: The frustration is now palpable for Austria, as Stefan Posch received a yellow card for tripping Marc Cucurella near the left sideline. Surprisingly enough, that’s actually the first booking of this contest!
81′: Ferrán had an easy shot that he just passed up to center it to Pedri, who couldn’t get a touch to it. That should’ve been 3-0 if Ferrán had only been more selfish.
79′: Das Team just had some excellent play inside the box with some nifty one-touch passes, but it all turned into nothing, as Carney Chukwuemeka’s shot went well wide and above the crossbar!
76′: It’s getting late early for Austria, which is resorting to desperation tactics. Marko Arnautović fell near the end line after a challenge from Pau Cubarsí, but contact between the two was minimal.
71′: Coming out of the hydration break, La Roja are finally making a few changes. Mikel Merino and Ferrán Torres have come on in place of Dani Olmo and Álex Baena.
66′: AND THERE IT IS TO ICE THE GAME! GOAL FOR PEDRO PORRO! SPAIN HAD BEEN PUSHING, AND IT EVENTUALLY GOT RECYCLED TO ÁLEX BAENA NEAR THE END LINE! HIS LEFT-FOOTED CROSS FOUND PORRO’S HEAD IN THE CENTER OF THE BOX! THAT’S PORRO’S FIRST GOAL FOR SPAIN!
65′: Some more good defense there by Austria on Lamine Yamal, as his dribbles on the right side of the box turned into nothing.
61′: That was the best scoring chance of the match for Austria, as Kalajdžić’s close-range header went over the bar! Spain still hasn’t put this game to bed, so despite being dominated, Das Team are still in it!
60′: That’s the third and fourth changes of the match for Das Team, as Romano Schmid has come off and Marko Arnautović is on! Also, Michael Gregoritsch is off and Saša Kalajdžić is on. Still no changes for La Roja.
59′: Lamine Yamal attempted his first shot of the second half, striking from just inside the box on the right, but it was immediately blocked!
53′: Spain’s high press has been causing lots of problems for Austria! Carney Chukwuemeka and Paul Wanner have both had some giveaways in their own defensive zone in the last few minutes, which is a bad sign even though neither of them turned into shots.
49′: The first shot after halftime came courtesy of Spain, but Mikel Oyarzabal’s effort didn’t really concern Alexander Schlager. It’s been a good game for the Austrian shot-stopper so far, despite the Real Sociedad man’s earlier goal.
46′: We’re back after halftime! Ralf Rangnick is making two changes; Florian Grillitsch and Carney Chukwuemeka have come into the game for Nicolas Seiwald and Xaver Schlager.
HT: The whistle has blown for the end of the first 45 minutes! La Roja absolutely dominated the first half, but it’s just 1-0 on the score sheet! Spain has attempted 11 shots worth 1.34 expected goals and put six on target, and Das Team have managed two shots worth 0.09 expected goals. Now, La Roja are -1200 on the Moneyline and -3500 to go through!

45′: That was another good sequence for Das Team, as Nicolas Seiwald got off a shot that was immediately blocked! Spain has been the far better side this game and certainly deserves to lead, but Austria is finding its way into the game.
43′: Stefan Posch had a great chance near the edge of the box, but he couldn’t control his touch and couldn’t manage to get off a shot! That was Austria’s best chance at scoring to this point, but the right-back — who’s scored only five goals for his country — couldn’t make the most of it.
38′: Lamine Yamal has made play after play, but none of his chances have turned into anything. He did just attempt a shot on target after a flurry of dribbles to get onto his right foot near the top of the box, but it wasn’t one that challenged Alexander Schlager much.
36′: AND NOW, THIS ONE WILL STAND! 1-0, SPAIN! MIKEL OYARZABAL GOT A GREAT LOOK NEAR THE PENALTY SPOT AFTER AN EXCELLENT LOW CROSS BY MARC CUCURELLA, AND HE TAPPED IT IN WITH HIS LEFT FOOT!
35′: Finally, the first shot of the game for Austria! It was not a good effort by David Alaba, as the Real Madrid man’s effort from well outside the box sailed over the bar, but at least that’s now in the books.
34′: Yamal got open over the top, and he ended up chipping it over the bar! However, the flag went up for offsides, so it won’t go down as a shot for him.
33′: SAVE by Alexander Schlager on a left-footed strike from Mikal Oyarzabal! It was a great diving save to his left to keep the score level.
31′: NO GOAL. IT IS STILL 0-0. PAU CUBARSÍ WAS CALLED FOR TOO MUCH CONTACT ON SCHLAGER AS HE TRIED TO PUNCH IT OUT.

29′: LA ROJA LEAD, 1-0! GOAL, MARC CUCURELLA! AFTER A CORNER, THE BALL ENDED UP BOUNCING AROUND THE BOX AND IT FELL TO THE LEFT-BACK’S FOOT! HE SMASHED IT HOME WITH HIS LEFT FOOT!
24′: It’s now time for the hydration break, bringing to an end an exciting but goal-free first 23 minutes of action! So far, Spain has managed three shots worth 0.31 expected goals, and Austria has yet to attempt a shot.
21′: YAMAL JUST NUTMEGGED KONRAD LAIMER! It didn’t turn into anything, but the crowd in Los Angeles loved it.
19′: That was close to turning into something for La Roja as well! Das Team turned it over deep in their own territory, and Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal operated a give-and-go, but Oyarzabal’s pass was just a bit too far ahead of Yamal and an Austrian defender got to it first.
18′: THAT REALLY SHOULD’VE BEEN A GOAL FOR AUSTRIA! MARCEL SABITZER SENT IN A GREAT CROSS TO THE BOX, AND MICHAEL GREGORITSCH SIMPLY COULDN’T GET HIS HEAD TO IT! STILL 0-0!
11′: Yamal fell in the box after a nice move to get around Konrad Laimer, but his fall wasn’t rewarded with a penalty. His protest was brief, despite some buzz in the crowd.
8′: Dani Olmo’s half-volley from near the center of the box was an absolute rocket, but it was immediately blocked! Still, La Roja are showing a lot of offensive aggression early on, even if they haven’t turned any of their chances into a particularly dangerous shot.
5′: Spain has now won the game’s first corner after a blocked shot by Kevin Danso against — who else? — Lamine Yamal.
2′: The first shot of the match came courtesy of Lamine Yamal, who recorded a tackle deep in his defensive territory and took it all the way up the field on a break by himself. After a give-and-go, his left-footed strike from outside the box was a roller right at Alexander Schlager! It wasn’t a threatening chance, but it was an exciting start to this match.
