90+14′: VAR has ruled the goal out. Portugal are going to do it. It’s a faint touch on the ball from Croatia that causes the offside. Portugal 2-1 Croatia.
90+12′: WOWWWWW. GOAL FOR CROATIA WITH THE LAST KICK OF THE GAME. A deep cross comes in, and it bounces around a few players and somehow, someway, it’s turned in by Joško Gvardiol. There is a question of offside, and it’s going to be reviewed by VAR. The ref is going to the monitor.
90+3′: GOAL FOR PORTUGAL. Gonçalo Ramos breaks Croatian hearts. It’s another delicious cross from Rafael Leão into the box, and Ramos somehow gets in between the two center backs and glances a header into the net. That’s one of the best headers you will ever see. Portugal 2-1 Croatia. We still have seven minutes of stoppage time remaining.
80′: Another offside goal. Luka Sučić is played through on goal, slots it home, but once again it’s a marginal offside call that denies the goal.
74′: HOW DID THAT NOT GO IN? Mateo Kovačić hits the post with a shot, and Kovačić gets another crack at it and it’s saved. He’s had a great game and was almost rewarded with a goal.
67′: GOAL FOR PORTUGAL. The penalty is given, and Cristiano Ronaldo steps up to score the first knockout goal of his World Cup career. Portugal 1-1 Croatia.
64′: PENALTY CHECK. VAR is looking at a possible foul on Renato Veiga by Croatia. The ref is going to the monitor.
60′: What a goal that would’ve been. A long ball is played over the top to Cristiano Ronaldo; he controls it brilliantly and dinks it over the keeper. Unfortunately for him, it’s ruled out for offside. He certainly wasn’t off by much.
58′: CHANCE. This is end-to-end stuff. Croatia break down the other side of the field and have numbers; the ball is played out to the left, it’s Luka Sučić who has a great chance but it’s saved and pushed out for a corner. This is chaos.
57′: CHANCE. This game has exploded into life. Rafael Leão gets the ball on the left side, cuts inside on his right foot and rips a rocket of a shot that rattles off the crossbar. That was close.
56′: Croatia have the ball in the net again but it’s ruled out for offside. You get the feeling that another Croatia goal would be the dagger, and that was close to being it. Let’s see how Portugal responds.
52′: GOAL FOR CROATIA. Ivan Perišić sends the Croatian fans into delight as a cross finds him at the back post; he takes a few touches and then hits it with his left foot and finds the net. From a Portugal perspective, Perišić should not have had that much time in the box. Portugal 0-1 Croatia.
47′: CHANCE! It’s the biggest chance of the game for Croatia. Mateo Kovačić gets the ball at the top of the box and somehow wiggles his way into shooting position, but it’s a good save from the Portuguese keeper.
HT: Portugal 0-0 Croatia. Not too many clear-cut chances in this one, but Portugal have definitely looked like the better team. They’ve had nine total shots and one on target, compared to three total shots for Croatia with one on target. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Portugal are currently -130 on the moneyline while Croatia are +265. If you think this one is going to extra time, a draw is priced at +175.
33′: This game is one-way traffic, and Portugal are knocking on the door. It feels like a goal is coming.
15′: Another decent chance for Portugal, this time from a corner. Renato Veiga gets free in the box and gets a clean header on it from six yards out but it’s blasted over the bar.
3′: CHANCE. Rafael Leão gets behind the Croatia defense down the left side and pulls it back across the box to Bruno Fernandes, whose shot is saved. It falls back to Fernandes but the second attempt is blocked by a Croatian defender. We’re off to a lively start in this one.
1′: And we’re off! We have kickoff in Toronto, and this Round of 32 matchup is underway.
