American League clubs kick off a three-game series Thursday night, as the Detroit Tigers visit the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
The Tigers (38–49, 4th AL Central) are coming off a three-game mauling of the Yankees in the Bronx. The Rangers (44–43, 1st AL West) return home from an impressive road trip, capped with six wins in their last seven contests. The teams first met at the outset of May, with Detroit taking two of three games in Motor City.
Looking at the pitching probables, we’ve got Detroit southpaw Framber Valdez (4–5, 4.05 ERA) taking on Texas right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (8–7, 3.95 ERA)
First pitch is at 8:05 p.m. ET. The odds are dead even on DraftKings Sportsbook, with both clubs listed at -110 on the moneyline, and the game total sits at O/U 7.5 runs.
Tigers vs. Rangers Preview
Detroit Tigers
Although Detroit is widely expected to be the top seller at this year’s trade deadline, a looming Tarik Skubal blockbuster hasn’t stopped the Tigers from playing some solid baseball of late. The club is an American League-best 16–11 since the beginning of June and just delivered three consecutive curb-stomps to the Yankees in the concrete jungle.
The offense, playing without Gleyber Torres (IL10) and Javier Baez (IL60), has come alive — ranking eighth in wRC+, ninth in wOBA, and sixth in xwOBA during that stretch. Catalyzing the surge is Dillon Dingler, who’s hitting .336 with a one-dot OPS, eight home runs, and 25 RBIs since the calendar flipped.
On the other side of the ball, Detroit’s pitching staff has rallied behind its ace. Indeed, the starting rotation leads MLB with a 3.03 ERA since June 1. Thursday’s starter, the erratic Framber Valdez, has posted an impressive 3.21 ERA (3.71 xERA) in five starts (28 IP) in that span. Still, the ex-Astros southpaw needs to show more consistency; his season ERA still sits north of four, and he’s coming off another four-run outing with only two strikeouts over six frames against his former employer.
Texas Rangers
The Tigers aren’t the only team that’s on a heater. The Rangers took care of business on their recent road trip, winning seven of 10 contests — including six of their last seven. They own a 16–12 record since the beginning of June, tied with Houston for second in the AL.
At this rate, the only thing thwarting Texas from running away with the weak AL West is injuries. Wyatt Langford had posted a 1.005 OPS with seven home runs through much of June before last week, landing on the 10-day IL. He joins Corey Seager (IL10), Danny Jansen (IL10), and Brandon Nimmo (DD) on the shelf for Thursday’s series opener. Still, Justin Foscue has been swinging one of the hottest bats on the planet, and Joc Pederson has crushed five homers in his last seven games amid a resurgent 2026 campaign.
Meanwhile, the Rangers’ pitching staff has done its best to persevere through severe batted-ball misfortune. Since June 1, the team’s 21st-ranked 4.59 ERA is underscored by a 3.58 xERA — top-five in the majors. However, right-hander Nathan Eovaldi doesn’t really have the luxury of favorable advanced metrics. He has largely struggled to recapture his Cy Young-level form from 2025, this year posting a 3.95 ERA (4.03 xERA) and a 1.16 WHIP in 16 starts (100.1 IP). He’s hoping to ride the momentum from his latest outing — seven shutout frames with nine strikeouts in Toronto — which followed a string of six-straight starts where he coughed up three or more earned runs.
Tigers vs. Rangers Pick, Best Bet
Even with a closed roof, there should be plenty of fireworks in Thursday’s series opener in Arlington. The scorching Tigers should pounce on Eovaldi from the first pitch, and even an injured Rangers lineup can handle the mercurial Valdez. At plus odds, there’s strong value in backing the over of only 7.5 runs.
