Santi Aldama Traded to Dallas Mavericks
Time: 7:00 p.m. ET
The Move: Mavericks acquire F Santi Aldama from the Grizzlies for 2030 protected Warriors first-round pick, two second-round picks, and G AJ Johnson
Grade for Mavericks: B+
On the surface, it may seem confusing for a 26-win team making win-now moves. But it’s all about context here.
As a result of trades made while Luka Doncic was still a Maverick, Dallas does not control their own pick for the next four seasons. New tanking rules aside, there is no incentive for the Mavs to tank for better draft picks. The team is the team now, and it’s time to focus on building around Cooper Flagg through trades and free agency. So there’s no reason for the new Masai Ujiri-Mike Schmitz brain trust to sit on their hands while they have their young, budding superstar.
Aldama is the kind of versatile offensive piece the team could use, and has only become more productive as his career goes on, increasing his PPG, RPG, and APG in all five seasons of his career. He can space the floor, put the ball on the deck a bit, and offers plus positional size as a 4 while being able to play the 5 in certain lineups. Aldama isn’t a great defender, but he has worked hard to become adequate on that end. The biggest sell for me is his passing, which is especially good for a connective piece; Aldama won’t necessarily create the advantages, but he’ll keep the ball moving to find shots for his teammates.
It’s also a question of opportunity cost here. While this does cost them two of the three second-round picks they own, the 2030 Warriors first is essentially a fake pick. That draft choice is protected 1-20, and if it doesn’t convey, it turns into a second-round pick that year. With most of their team ready for the retirement home, my money is against Golden State being a solid playoff team four years from now. So, in effect, Dallas is giving up three second-round picks for a starter-level player that fits the team’s timeline at 25 years old. You can make the gripe that, with their limited draft assets, this isn’t the move to make. But I love the idea of Aldama alongside Cooper Flagg for the next several years.
Grade for Grizzlies: D+
Now that we’ve established that the return is likely to be three second-round picks, I’m confused about this one for the Grizzlies. It reads to me like selling low on a good player to address a positional glut.
As it stands, Memphis has a crowded frontcourt. Here are the players slated to get most of their minutes at the 4/5 spots: Cam Boozer, Zach Edey, G.G. Jackson, Taylor Hendricks, and Karim Lopez. That doesn’t include guys like Olivier Maxence-Prosper and Jerami Grant, who may or not be in the rotation (or on the roster at all). Something had to give. I’m just not so sure that trading Aldama for cents on the dollar was the answer.
Out of all the players in that frontcourt, Aldama is the second-best future bet of the bunch behind Boozer, the third pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The two can theoretically play together, with Aldama providing a valuable offensive outlet for the rookie. Instead, Aldama is gone, and the Grizzlies (likely) have three second-round picks and AJ Johnson to show for it. Johnson, now on his fourth team in three years, is far from a useful prospect. It’s a head-scratcher after the Grizzlies picked up a bevy of second-rounders during the draft; second-round picks are not an asset they are starved for.
The one positive in my book is that this maintains their large trade exceptions. Memphis now has multiple large exceptions they can use to facilitate trades by taking on bad contracts. With the rebuild fully on, any avenue to picking up talent is one they must explore, and this trade preserves that ability. But it comes at the cost of the kind of talent they should be looking to pick up.
Norman Powell signs with the Chicago Bulls
Time: 9:51 a.m. ET
The Move: SG Norman Powell signs with the Chicago Bulls on a two-year, $45 million deal.
Grade for Bulls: B
The Bulls land the veteran first-time All Star swingman on an excellent deal, adding Powell’s explosive 21.7 PPG to beef up their feeble roster. They’re going to try to be competitive in the East, and they’ll be appreciative of Powell’s offense to supplement Josh Giddey’s playmaking abilities and the growing threat of Matas Buzelis. Powell should be able to immediately make an impact both in real life and in fantasy, with plenty of shots coming his way for a Bulls team that’s desperate for some extra juice.
The Bulls remain absolute long shots for the NBA Championship, currently sitting at +100000 odds to capture the title this season on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Dean Wade signs with the 76ers
Time: 10:38 p.m. ET
The Move: F Dean Wade signs a four-year, $39 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. The fourth year is partially guaranteed.
Grade for 76ers: A
The Philadelphia 76ers are certainly feeling good after last season. They rallied from the grave to steal a series from the Boston Celtics, revenge that was a long time coming. With Daryl Morey gone, Mike Gansey steps into the GM role for the Sixers, and is making an impact in his first offseason already.
Dean Wade is the kind of player the Sixers have been sorely missing: a physical, skilled, defensive-minded power forward who is made for playoff basketball. At 6’10”, Wade has shot at least 36% from three in four straight seasons, rebounds the ball well, and has a significant impact on Cleveland’s defense. He slots in well next to Joel Embiid, picking up tough defensive assignments and taking some rebounding burden from Embiid. With Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Paul George, and VJ Edgecombe as presumed starters, all Wade has to do is knock down open threes and concentrate on his defense. Easy enough.
Deals like this often come with sticker shock, but here, you have to look at cap percentages. This deal takes up only 6% of Philadelphia’s cap space, and with the rest of their starting group locked in, they won’t mind giving him extra years. Assuming George picks up his option a year from now, Philly’s starting five is locked in for at least two years, and they’ve maintained room to sign Kelly Oubre Jr. or other free agents to round out the bench. A home run by the new GM Gansey.
Kawhi Leonard traded to the Raptors
Time: 3:42 p.m. ET
The Move: SF/PF Kawhi Leonard traded to the Raptors for SF Brandon Ingram, SG Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, one pick swap, and two second-round picks
Grade for Raptors: A-
It’s the summer of 2018 all over again — and not just because LeBron James is a free agent.
Kawhi Leonard, the man who once led the Toronto Raptors to their lone NBA title, is reportedly headed back north of the border. After almost a full week of rumors and posturing, ESPN’s Shams Charania is alleging that the 2025 second-team All-NBA wing will be traded from the Clippers to the Raptors for a package that includes Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and two first-round picks. Leonard has just one year left on his current contract, but unlike in 2019, it appears that the former Finals MVP is willing to ink a two-year extension with Toronto that could be worth upwards of $123 million.
There are always injury concerns with Leonard and he just turned 35-years-old on Monday. However, the SDSU product is coming off arguably the most impressive statistical campaign of his career, averaging 27.9 points per game with a .629 true shooting rate. He’ll now join Scottie Barnes and sophomore Collin Murray-Boyles to form one of the league’s most imposing front courts. Remember, with Barnes and CMB sharing the floor in 2025-26, the Raptors held opponents to just 108.1 points per 100 possessions. It’s tantalizing to consider what havoc that duo might be able to wreck with one of the most regarded wing defenders in NBA history now on the roster.

Kristaps Porzingis re-signs with Warriors
Time: 6:47 p.m. ET
The Move: F/C Kristaps Porzingis re-signs with the Golden State Warriors for two years and $40 million
Grade for Warriors: B+
Finally, a clue into Golden State’s offseason plans, which could get wild. The sticker shock seems high, but Porzingis will take up less than 1/8th of Golden State’s cap room, and the 30-year-old commanded a mere two-year deal with no options. The gamble isn’t on the talent; Porzingis was productive down the stretch, and Golden State had a +5.1 net rating per 100 possessions with KP on the floor.
The gamble is on health, and there’s reason to think the Warriors have figured out some of his chronic issues. After missing 10 of his first 11 games after coming to Golden State at February’s trade deadline, Porzingis played in 14 of their last 20 games, averaging 24 minutes per game. Compare that to his availability with Atlanta, where KP played in 17 of 53 possible games, and it’s reasonable to assume Warriors training coach Rick Celebrini had some tricks up his sleeve. If they can get 50-60 games out of Porzingis playing 25-30 minutes per night, the deal is a home run for Golden State.
UPDATE: The second year of Porzingis’ deal has only $3 million guaranteed; since the contract doesn’t include a salary raise, he is immediately eligible to be traded.
Ja Morant traded to Trail Blazers
Time: 4:32 p.m. ET
The Move: Memphis Grizzlies trade G Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers for F Jerami Grant and F Kris Murray
Trade Grade: C+ for Trail Blazers, B- for Grizzlies
- Memphis: It’s hard to ignore the fact that Memphis should have done this a while ago. But the saga is over, and they can start with a clean slate. Grant has two years left on his $70 million deal, assuming he picks up his player option. Still, they have no obligation to play him and risk interfering with their youngsters. It’s sure confusing to see a former All-Star traded for spare parts, but Memphis had to make this happen, and did so without attaching picks to dump Morant’s contract. That in itself is a win.
- Portland: Difficult to fully judge this move without knowing what comes next, which may well be Jaylen Brown. But for now, it’s a head-scratcher. Sure, they turned two little-used rotation players into a very talented guard, but I have a hard time seeing how this team works. A Ja-Dame backcourt has the defensive integrity of one-ply toilet paper, and they now have two ball-dominant players in Ja and Deni Advija who struggle to play off the ball. Perhaps more of this makes sense after subsequent trades, and even if this doesn’t pan out, they didn’t give up anything of value to take a shot on Ja. Still, I’m scratching my head.
Fantasy Impact: It was unlikely that Morant would have played much, if at all, without a trade for the Grizzlies. This puts him in a position to be the lead guard for Portland, sharing 1A scoring duties with Deni Avdija, who takes a bit of a fantasy hit. It may be less fantasy impact than we are used to from Ja, but it’s better than rotting on the bench while Memphis explores trades. This is also a boost to Scotty Pippen Jr. and Ty Jerome, who are bound to get more usage in the Grizzlies’ backcourt. Grant and Murray won’t have much fantasy impact in Memphis, and are unlikely to play much at all.
Betting Impact: Portland remains firmly on the outside of the contenders; their +8000 odds place them 16th in the NBA to win the title, and their +4000 odds to win the West place them eighth in the conference. It’s ultimately not a needle-mover in the short term for the Trail Blazers. Memphis, already dead-set on a rebuild, remains near the bottom of the league in odds.
