Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres prediction, pick for MLB on Monday 6/29/26

Wrigley Field gets the loudest run environment on Monday’s slate, with Chicago holding the cleaner early scoring path. The Cubs enter at 46-38 after six wins in seven games, a Mets sweep, and a road series win in Milwaukee. San Diego arrives in a dangerous part of its schedule, with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks looming after this series. The weather turns every elevated mistake into a problem, but the handicap still starts with the starters. Chicago gets the softer matchup against Griffin Canning, while Shota Imanaga gives the Cubs a sturdier path through the first half. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cubs vs. Padres prediction, preview

Canning brings the board’s worst starter profile into the worst possible yard. He is 1-5 with a 7.38 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 45 hits, 35 ER, 26 walks, 43 strikeouts, and eight HR allowed across 42.2 innings. His walk rate sits at 13.6%, with 5.5 BB/9 and 1.7 HR/9. The contact numbers are louder: 92.0 mph average exit velocity, 52.1% hard-hit, 35.5% sweet-spot, 10.7% barrel, .371 wOBA, .350 xwOBA, and .434 xSLG. His road line adds more trouble, with a 9.56 ERA, 2.19 WHIP, 21 hits, 14 walks, and four HR in 16 innings. Imanaga has allowed 20 HR in 92 innings, but his 1.05 WHIP, 88 strikeouts, 23 walks, 23.8% K rate, 6.2% walk rate, .223 xBA, .299 xwOBA, and 37.3% hard-hit rate separate him sharply from Canning.

Chicago’s expected top five gives this bet its best shape. Pete Crow-Armstrong brings 17 HR, 20 steals, a .278/.364/.505 line, .375 wOBA, and 142 wRC+. Alex Bregman has been colder than the name value, but his lineup spot still matters ahead of better damage. Michael Busch gives Chicago a .370 OBP, 15.7% walk rate, 119 wRC+, and the left-handed lift this weather rewards. Seiya Suzuki owns a .310/.397/.552 last-15 line with three HR and 15 RBI. Ian Happ adds 17 HR, a .234 ISO, and 121 wRC+ from a switch-hitting slot. Chicago’s .235/.331/.397 split against righties includes 73 HR, 181 XBH, and 273 walks, which fits Canning’s traffic problem.

San Diego has enough power to keep the full-game over alive, especially if its expected right-handed stack holds. The Padres have hit only .224/.291/.356 with a .648 OPS, 14 HR, and 56 XBH against left-handed pitching, which limits their floor against Imanaga. Fernando Tatis Jr. gives them the best counter, with a .323 mark against lefties and a .350/.402/.500 June. Ty France has the best current power shape, with 10 HR, .503 slugging, and 125 wRC+. Manny Machado still has 15 HR, but his .188/.272/.392 line and 85 wRC+ create volatility. Jackson Merrill’s .212/.272/.346 line and 74 wRC+ leave San Diego too dependent on a few swings.

Padres vs. Cubs pick, best bet

The game context makes the early Cubs angle stronger than the full-game team total. Wrigley has 88-degree game weather, 0% precipitation, and 16 mph wind out, with Chicago under an extreme heat warning. Those conditions punish Canning’s walk, barrel, and hard-contact profile immediately. San Diego’s bullpen can also erase some of the late-game value on Chicago scoring. Mason Miller owns a 0.79 ERA, Yuki Matsui sits at 1.53, Wandy Peralta at 1.69, Jason Adam at 2.30, and Adrian Morejon at 3.43. Chicago’s bullpen carries more late volatility with Palencia on the injured list, 37.1 recent innings, and a 4.10 last-seven ERA. That gives San Diego a late path without making its starter matchup equal.

The best bet is Cubs first five innings team total over 3.5 at +105, playable to -110. The full-game over can cash, but it needs San Diego to solve Imanaga enough before Chicago’s bullpen enters. Cubs -1.5 has side appeal, but it inherits late bullpen and backdoor risk. Cubs full-game team total over 5.5 looks tempting in this weather, but San Diego’s relief group is the wrong late opponent. The sharper window is Canning’s first two trips through the order, where walks, barrels, heat, and wind all align.

Best bet: Cubs F5 team total over 3.5.

Projected score: Cubs 8, Padres 5.

Best bet: Cubs F5 TT o3.5 runs (+105) vs. Padres
