The late game has the strangest imbalance on the board. Los Angeles brings the famous lineup, the traveling noise, and the sharper full-season profile. The Athletics bring the better starting pitcher and the cleaner first-half matchup. Sutter Health Park adds another wrinkle, with 90-degree game air, a small-park offensive feel, and enough heat to keep the total alive. The Dodgers can still win the full game, but the first five innings revolve around Gage Jump’s damage suppression against Eric Lauer’s barrel leakage. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Athletics vs. Dodgers prediction, preview
Jump gives Oakland the best individual edge in the matchup. He enters 3-1 with a 2.04 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 35 strikeouts, and 10 walks across 35.1 innings. His June run looks even sharper, with a 3-0 record, 1.19 ERA, 30 strikeouts, nine walks, and 0.79 WHIP over 30.1 innings. The advanced sheet backs the surface: 2.94 xERA, .224 xBA, .308 xSLG, .270 xwOBA, 88.5 mph average exit velocity, 32.6% hard-hit, 2.2% barrel, 25.7% strikeout rate, and 7.4% walk rate. That profile attacks the exact Dodgers strength by taking away clean lift.
Lauer has improved since joining Los Angeles, and that matters. The Dodgers have won his starts, and he just threw six hitless innings behind an opener against Minnesota. Tonight, though, he is listed as the starter, which keeps Oakland’s early window clean. His larger profile remains dangerous in this park: 3-5, 4.87 ERA, 6.18 xERA, 5.24 SIERA, 5.34 xFIP, 5.35 FIP, 5.85 K/9, 3.34 BB/9, and 2.23 HR/9. The contact sheet adds the neon: 88.8 mph average exit velocity, 38.4% hard-hit, 36.9% sweet-spot, 12.3% barrel, and .355 xwOBA. Warm Sacramento air makes that barrel rate a problem immediately.
Oakland has enough top-half power to make Lauer pay before the bullpens enter. Nick Kurtz is the engine with 19 HR, seven steals, a 19.4% walk rate, .279/.423/.525 slash, .246 ISO, .407 wOBA, 159 wRC+, and 3.2 WAR. He also owns six HR against lefties and an .836 OPS in that split. Shea Langeliers adds 19 HR, a .232 ISO, .500 slugging, and 127 wRC+. Tyler Soderstrom brings 13 HR, a 12.8% walk rate, .218 ISO, .460 slugging, and 119 wRC+. Jacob Wilson, Jose Meneses, Max Muncy, and Alek Thomas give the order enough contact around the power. Brent Rooker’s absence removes a major bat, but the early scoring case still runs through Kurtz, Langeliers, and Lauer’s barrel problem.
Dodgers vs. Athletics pick, best bet
The Dodgers counter keeps the full-game over in play. Shohei Ohtani, Andy Pages, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernández, Kyle Tucker, Tommy Edman, Alex Freeland, and Dalton Rushing can stress any starter. Ohtani brings 17 HR, a 15.5% walk rate, .295/.412/.538 slash, .243 ISO, .403 wOBA, and 159 wRC+. Freeman adds 13 HR, .289/.379/.492, .379 wOBA, and 143 wRC+, while Pages has 15 HR, eight steals, .205 ISO, and 120 wRC+. Betts has been heating up again, and Freeman and Pages helped drive a recent 17-hit outburst. Jump still makes Dodgers team total over 5.5 inefficient, because his 2.2% barrel rate fights the cleanest version of that bet.
The bullpen and market decide the play. Los Angeles has the better late-game structure, with Tanner Scott, Alex Vesia, and stronger leverage depth behind the starter. Oakland’s bullpen has more volatility and already wasted a recent Jump gem after he threw five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. That makes the full-game Athletics angles thinner than the early window. Over 10.5 has heat, park, Dodgers depth, Lauer barrels, and Oakland bullpen chaos behind it. Dodgers -1.5 asks the weaker starter matchup to become a margin edge. The best bet is Athletics F5 -0.5 at +100, playable to -110.
Projected score: Dodgers 7, Athletics 6, with Oakland leading after five.
Best bet: Athletics F5 -0.5 (+100) vs. Athletics
