Jordan has been playing out of possession at a high rate, which should allow the Argentinians to hold onto the ball for the majority of the match and get the looks they want to score while simultaneously keeping another clean sheet here. To the surprise of nobody, the Argentinian side remains one of the best on the planet, and for good reason. While they flipped with France in the latest edition of the FIFA world rankings, they remain No. 2 overall and are now second in odds to win the World Cup at +520 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook, an uptick since the start of group play.
Argentina does not have a ton to play for today after locking up a Round of 32 appearance that’ll come against Cabo Verde next week. With a perfect six points, they took Group J in hand with a 3-0 win over Algeria that included a hat trick from Messi, then downed Austria 2-0 as well. In the World Cup, Argentina have Algeria, who come in at 31st in the FIFA rankings. While they didn’t dominate possession in either, the Argentinian side put up at least nine shots in each contest and has been clinical when they do have the ball with 90% pass accuracy in both. Having the best footballer in the world as the focal point of the squad gives them a massive edge in any match, especially with the superstar scoring all five of the nation’s goals in the tournament thus far. Still, surrounding talent such as Lautaro Martinez, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister make up an attacking side that’s not to be trifled with. The defense has been quite sound as well, limiting chances and not allowing a goal yet to this point. The question for today is merely whether Messi and other top names will suit up, or if they’ll receive the day off in preparation for the knockouts.
This year marked the first-ever World Cup qualification for Jordan. The nation enters at 72nd in the FIFA world rankings after dropping nine spots in this tournament (though these remain unofficial rankings until group play is over). Clearly, the side remains an underdog.
It’s been a tough tournament so far for Jordan. The team hasn’t yet secured a point, losing both games outright. They dropped the opening contest 3-1 to Austria and were left scrambling for possession through most of the day, though Ali Olwan recorded the first World Cup goal in program history, marking a major milestone. The Jordanian side did play a better game in the first half of their second fixture, going up 1-0 on Algeria behind a Nizar Al-Rashdan goal. However, the slim lead evaporated as they allowed the equalizer and the winner in the 69th and 82nd minutes. On the day, they held control of the ball for just 25% of the proceedings. It’s been far from a good performance, but just being on this stage is enough to consider it a landmark year for Jordan’s national squad.

Their team has far too much talent and is on another level both tactically and in terms of clinical skill, though this isn’t intended as a slight to Jordan. There’s a case for over 2.5 goals for Argentina here, but it makes sense to just pick them at -1.5 on the spread and parlay it with a clean sheet. This shouldn’t be much of a battle.
