Before the tournament, Group I was anointed as the “Group of Death”, as it features the 2018 World Cup champions and 2022 runners-up France, the current African champions in Senegal, and arguably the most impressive team in European qualifying, Norway. This afternoon, that group will reach its conclusion with a pair of 3 p.m. ET games as Les Bleus take on a heavily rotated Red, White, and Blue side and the Lions of Teranga face the Lions of Mesopotamia with both needing to win to have a chance of advancing.
Right now, France has the upper hand, as while both it and Norway have six points, its goal difference is +5 and the Red, White, and Blue’s +4. The group winner will face Sweden, while the second-place team will face Ivory Coast. Les Bleus simply need a draw.
In the concurrent match, Senegal has a -3 goal difference, but if it beats Iraq by multiple goals, it should have a good chance of advancing. Four teams already have four points and South Korea has three points and a -1 goal difference but only two goals scored, so the Lions of Teranga should be shooting for at least a two-goal win to vault themselves ahead of the Taegeuk Warriors. The Lions of Mesopotamia need a lopsided victory to have a chance.

The Lions of Teranga haven’t mathematically clinched it, but it’s highly likely that they’ll advance for the third time in four appearances and face (possibly) England. It hasn’t been a great tournament for Senegal, but today was certainly a confidence-inspiring performance. The African giants out-shot Iraq 28 to six, getting 12 shots on target to the Lions of Mesopotamia’s one. The biggest winner of today? Senegal, of course! The biggest losers? South Korea and Scotland, whose already long odds of advancing to the Round of 32 have taken another hit.
FT, France vs. Norway: And that’s full time! France has won and topped the group on 9 points, and it will likely face Sweden in the Round of 32! Norway, meanwhile, will advance to the knockouts on 6 points for the third time in four appearances, and it’ll have a difficult matchup against the Ivory Coast!

Les Bleus look like clearly the strongest team in this competition, regardless of how this one ends. Norway has impressed with its B team, but it hasn’t taken advantage of all of its chances, and perfection is required to have a chance against France.
66′, France vs. Norway: That’ll be it for Dembélé and Olise! They’ve been subbed off, with Rayan Cherki and Bradley Barcola coming on in their places! What an incredible tournament so far for both of them, and it’s not like Cherki and Barcola represent much of a respite for the Red, White, and Blue.

53′, Senegal vs. Iraq: That was a really sloppy pass there by Lamine Camara. The turnover didn’t end a particularly dangerous chance and won’t have an impact on the game, but it’s emblematic of Senegal’s overall struggles since scoring the opener.
55′, France vs. Norway: Leo Ostigård got pretty close to scoring there for Norway after a header, and the Red, White, and Blue — even with their B team — have looked much better in the second half. France probably won’t get nervous as long as it maintains its two-goal lead, but things would start to get nervy if the Red, White, and Blue pull one back.
50′, Senegal vs. Iraq: Senegal has had most of the ball since the start of the second half, but Iraq has defended quite well, putting all nine of its men in the box at times! A 1-0 win for the Lions of Teranga may not be enough.

46′, France vs. Norway: We’re back in action here in Boston! Norway is making two changes, as Fredrik Bjørkan and Kristian Thorstvedt have come on for Marcus Pederson and Morten Thorsby! It certainly looks like Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard won’t appear, even as subs. No changes yet for France; Dembélé is still looking to score his fourth.
HT, Senegal vs. Iraq: There were nine minutes of added time in this game, thanks to the red card VAR review and the medical breaks to treat Basil twice, but despite a few decent chances for each team, there have been no goals since early in the game. A 1-0 win for Senegal could be enough to take it through, but it surely would like to score another to ensure that South Korea and Scotland (at the very least) are below it in the standings. It’ll be a nervy final 45 minutes for the Lions of Teranga and their fans, that’s for sure.

They arguably coulv’e scored more than three goals, given that they’ve attempted 14 shots and put eight on target. With victory relatively secure, will France take Dembélé and Mbappé off to rest them for a likely Round of 32 clash against Sweden? Les Bleus have made quite the statement so far.
45’+2, France vs. Norway: In the past few minutes, both Desiré Doué and Michael Olise have had clear opportunities in one-on-one situations with the goalie, only to be denied by brave Egil Selvik charges to stop them from even shooting!
43′, France vs. Norway: France started a counter after Dayot Upamecano’s goal line clearance, and Dembélé got the ball on the right side of the box! Unbelievably, he didn’t shoot, despite the crowd’s urging! Oleg Salenko’s five goals from 1994 is the single-match record.
42′, Senegal vs. Iraq: The Lions of Teranga have had less than 60% possession so far this match, which is frankly surprising given how desperately they need multiple goals to have their best chance at survival and Iraq’s weak defense.
