What a matinee pitching matchup we get on Wednesday in Miami.
Let’s start on the Marlins side with the return of Eury Perez. It’s been an underwhelming season for the 23-year-old stud, which is what made his injury back on May 27 in Toronto even more frustrating. It truly looked like his campaign was about to turn around. Not only was Perez in the middle of a dominant outing against the Jays, having thrown four scoreless innings with a season-high nine strikeouts, but he was also on the heels of a fantastic outing versus the Mets. That’s why I have a difficult time taking Perez’s 4.91 xERA too seriously. Yes, he’s walked too many opponents (10.6%) and he’s conceded far too many barrels (13.8%), but goodness does he ever pass the eye test when you actually watch him pitch.
Opposing Perez will be a man at the opposite end of his baseball life. In fact, Jacob deGrom turned 38-years-old just five days ago. However, the veteran right-hander is still maintaining a 3.59 ERA and a 3.56 xERA and touching 99 mph with his fastball. Like his counterpart on Wednesday, deGrom has struggled with the home run ball in 2026, but at the end of the day, the fire-baller sits eighth in MLB in K/BB ratio (5.4) and juuuust outside the top 10 in WHIP (1.03). It’s really just been about consistency for deGrom, who has finally been healthy for a prolonged stretch. In eight of deGrom’s 15 starts, he’s surrendered a single earned run or fewer. However, there’s also been three starts where he’s imploded for six earned runs. The highs have been so high and more frequent, yet the lows have been super low.
These aren’t your slightly older brother’s Marlins, either. This is a youthful lineup that has some serious pop. They can take advantage of a long ball issue, even while taking the field at the usually spacious LoanDepot Park. In June, a month where Miami holds a record of 15-5, the club possesses a .184 ISO and a 113 wRC+. In yesterday’s victory, Owen Caissie, Joe Mack and Heriberto Hernandez all went deep. That’s three players with rookie eligibility. Impressive stuff.
Rangers vs. Marlins pick, best bet
Best Bet: Marlins ML (+101)
Miami is 27-17 at home this season, one of six teams winning at least 60% of games where its batting in the bottom of innings. These’s a bit of a question mark with Eury Perez coming off the IL to make this start, but it’s difficult to not just blindly side with the home dog here.
