Prior to the start of the 2026 MLB season, one would’ve picked the Detroit Tigers to win the AL Central and put the Chicago White Sox near the bottom of the division. Turns out, it’s a topsy-turvy world as these teams have flipped positions in the standings this year. The White Sox are top dogs at the moment, while the Tigers are stuck at the bottom and trying to claw their way back into the mix.
As the new series begins tonight at 6:40 p.m., here’s a betting prediction and pick for this White Sox vs. Tigers matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
White Sox vs. Tigers prediction, preview
Chicago White Sox
All it took for the White Sox to become relevant again seems to have been some divine intervention. They’re atop the AL Central at 39-34, are 6-4 over their last 10 games, and maintain a very slight positive run differential of +1. However, it’s worth noting they’re only 15-22 away from home, which could play a factor tonight in Detroit. Chicago sits eighth in scoring with 4.73 runs per game behind a largely impressive offense. The White Sox are also eighth in OPS at .735 with a BABIP of .286 and a .239/.322/.413 slash line. Against lefties like the opposing starter today, they’re slashing .242/.329/.432 with an improved .761 OPS though, which will prove important against a top arm. They also have 34 of their 102 homers vs. southpaws and an overall ISO of .173 that comes in at fourth in the MLB. The one true weak point for this lineup is a 24.0% K% that ranks third-to-last, but the swing-happy approach has allowed the bats to largely thrive.
LHP Brandon Eisert starts today for Chicago, bringing a 1-0 record in his 16 games. He’s primarily worked as a reliever and is making just his third appearance as an opener here. He has a 4.86 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP and 19 Ks across 16.2 IP. He’ll be followed by RHP Erick Fedde in a bulk role. The latter has a 4.50 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 44 SO in 66.0 IP, going 2-5 in 14 games. The bullpen ranks 18th in ERA at 4.27 with a 1.35 WHIP and 10.8% K-BB%.
Detroit Tigers
It’s been a miserable campaign for the Tigers, who are coming off back-to-back postseason appearances but will now be faced with some difficult decisions heading into the summer. They’re 4-6 over their last 10 games and have dropped to 30-44 on the year with a run differential of -10. At 6.5 games shy of a Wild Card berth, all hope isn’t lost — but it is running thinner by the day. Detroit produces just 4.07 runs a night with a slight uptick at home. The offense as a whole isn’t one that particularly strikes fear into opposing pitchers, amassing a .706 OPS on a slash line of .233/.313/.392. Facing a lefty opener may be a problem early since the Tigers’ numbers are .216/.323/.371 vs. southpaws, but they may fare better against the right-handed Fedde at .238/.310/.710 with a .710 OPS in that split. They also have 83 homers on the year with a respectable .160 ISO, but a .279 BABIP is on the low side. A 23.2% K% is also on the worse end of things, but a 9.8% BB% sits ninth.
Superstar LHP Tarik Skubal gets the ball for this outing. He’s started just eight games so far and gone 3-3 with a 2.81 ERA, an 0.98 WHIP and 49 Ks in 48.0 IP. He just recently returned from an injury, throwing 4.2 innings with five hits, one walk and two earned runs allowed, striking out four hitters in a loss to the Cleveland Guardians. As he knocks the rust off from an absence of over a month, he should continue to round back into form while trade rumors begin to swirl around his name. For today, the bullpen behind him ranks 16th in ERA at 4.05 with a 1.37 WHIP and 11.6% K-BB%.
White Sox vs. Tigers pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Tigers as strong -204 Moneyline favorites at home today. The White Sox are plus-money underdogs at +167 odds to win outright with the run total set at eight.
Best Bet: CHI White Sox +1.5 (-126)
C’mon now. Yes, Skubal is on the mound and could easily dominate through the early stages, but he’s also still working back into form after he missed over a month of action. Plus, Chicago hits lefties better than right-handers, so that’s an added bonus even if the matchup is one of the MLB’s most terrifying on paper. There’s enough there to make me comfortable taking a superior offense to keep this game close. Here’s the thing, though. The White Sox are 42-31 on the run line this year, qualifying for the fourth-best cover rate of any team at 57.5%. The Tigers come in at 47.3%, the eighth lowest in baseball. In their lone series of the year last month, two-of-three games ended with a one-run margin as the Sox completed a sweep with scores of 2-1, 7-1 and 4-3. It’s a small sample, sure, but it’s not meaningless. If Detroit’s offense can’t break its recent slump (slashing .185/.257/.389 in the last week), there’s even more reason to feel good about this pick.
