It’s been a whirlwind week, and finally, we arrive at the final opening game. Uzbekistan and Colombia kick off their respective World Cup games on Wednesday night, and all 48 teams will have played their first game. It’s a big clash for the Group K standings after Portugal and DR Congo drew this afternoon.

90+10′ – We nearly got a worldie from Uzbekistan right at the death, but the final whistle blows on Uzbekistan, and Colombia have their victory. What a match!!!
90+9′ – NOW THAT’S A CLINCHER!!! It’s a simply remarkable bit of possession play on the boundary for Juan Hernández, wasting away the last seconds. Instead of deading the ball to the corner, he whips in a beautiful cross, and it’s Jaminton Campaz on the receiving end to head home the death blow. What a link-up from the two subs, and a credit to manager Néstor Lorenzo pressing the right buttons.
90+8′ – If only Uzbekistan could locate a cross. Another chance goes wanting as the free kick sails over the touchline. That might be a wrap.
90+7′ – It’s a free kick 10 yards outside the box for Uzbekistan as they look for their equalizer. Can they do it at the death?
90+5′ – Crucial bit of possession for Colombia. They win the ball down the right flank and kill precious seconds.
90+2′ – Uzbekistan is SO close. They cycle the ball back again, and the low cross is glanced across the net. Jhon Arias gets a dodgy clearance that glances off his arm, but the VAR sees nothing in it. Colombia responds with a couple of defensive subs to see the game off, while the Uzbeks use their last sub for fresh attacking legs.
90′ – NEARLY IN!!! Uzbekistan plays it well into the box, and Mozgovoy gets a clean look at the equalizer just inside the box. But his attempt is a foot over the crossbar, and the Colombian defense can breathe easy. We’re getting eight minutes of added time; buckle up.
88′ – It’s well worked for Uzbekistan down the right side, and the attempted shot is blocked over the touchline for their third corner. But once again, the cross is far too long, sailing over everyone and over the touchline. That was a significant missed opportunity for Uzbekistan.
87′ – This time, it’s the sub Campaz with a chance to put things away, but his shot from outside the box sails over the bar. Still, the Uzbeks have a pulse. Will they find another equalizer?
85′ – Colombia wastes no time countering, and Campaz wins a corner with a blocked cross. They take their time setting up, and the headed cross cycles back across. Jefferson Lerma has a chance to put the game away, but his one-timer is off the side of the net. The Uzbeks are on life support.
84′ – The Uzbeks get a free kick down the left side, a chance to get the equalizer. But the cross sails over everybody and out for a goal kick. Not ideal for the comeback chances.
80′ – The Colombians will make some changes to see out the last 10+ minutes. Juan Hernández replaces Luis Suárez up top, while Richard Ríos takes the place of Gustavo Puerta in the midfield. Will they be able to see out this victory?
77′ – More subs as the teams make their final pushes. The injured Rustamjon Ashurmatov makes way for Jakhongir Urozov, while Azizbek Amonov takes a spot up top in place of the Uzbekistan goal scorer, Abbosbek Fayzullayev. Certainly, a game he will not forget.
72′ – We’ve got a sub out of the break. Jaminton Campaz takes the place of James Rodriguez, as the Colombians buckle down searching for a third goal to put this one away.
68′ – We’re at the advertising break with the Colombians back in control. They’re -1600 on the live moneyline now.
65′ – DIAZ BRINGS IT BACK!!! Colombia wastes no time taking the momentum back. They turn the ball over, and Díaz breaks down the side to put a shot on goal. The goalkeeper, Yusupov, gets a hand on the ball, but it slips into the net, putting the Colombians back up. That’s a tidy goal and assist for Luis Díaz to kick off his World Cup campaign.
Let’s take a quick glance at the odds after that equalizer. Colombia has gone from -1200 to -140, while the Uzbeks have gone from +3500 to +2000 after the comeback. A draw is there at +125.
60′ – THE PRESSURE PAYS OFF!!! Uzbekistan finds a channel down the left side, and a desperation cross by Khamdanov is met with a volley from Shomurodov. It needs some saving, and it deflects right to Abbosbek Fayzullayev, who nods it into the goal. Uzbekistan has its first-ever World Cup goal, and we’re knotted up after 60 minutes. You could hear a pin drop in the Estadio Azteca.
60′ – Pressing appears to be working for the Uzbekistan team. They’re winning the possession battle in the second half and creating some solid opportunities. With the first 15 minutes of the second half in the books, they’re feeling dangerous.
53′ – The Colombian counter nearly pays off. Uzbek center back Rustamjon Ashurmatov has to make a last-ditch block to save a second Colombian goal. They’re certainly playing with fire as they seek an equalizer.
52′ – Again, the Uzbeks are gaining momentum. A good play down the left side frees Urunov down the left side, and he has a chance at the clear. It’s dealt with by the Colombians, but they’re inching closer to an equalizer.
50′ – More quality forward play from Uzbekistan. They win their second corner to apply some pressure, but the cross is long. They’re pressing higher on the pitch to generate chances, which may burn them if the Colombian counterattack can take advantage.
47′ – A strong tackle gives the Uzbeks a great look in transition, but the layoff pass is whiffed on, and the Colombians recover. They had numbers if the passing had been crisper.
46′ – We’re kicking off out of halftime, and we have a pair of subs for Uzbekistan as they chase this game. Dostonbek Khamdanov comes in at forward, and Farrukh Sayfiev will play on the right wing. Hopefully, those two can jolt an Uzbek attack that was lifeless for most of the first half.

It’s a surgical half for the Colombians. They played around the edges for the first 20 minutes, testing the defense for weaknesses, before finding the breakthrough. Luis Díaz was deadly for the entire half and picked up a key assist. Here are some key stats from that first half:

45+5′ – Nearly a second for Colombia. They win a corner down the left side, and the clearance rattles around. It finds the boot of Jhon Arias, who had an open net, but it scuffs off his boot and the Uzbeks clear.
45+1′ – Right as we get into extra time, the Uzbeks capture some momentum and win their first corner. But the Colombians deal with the initial cross, and a volley attempt is shanked. The attack is a bit more promising from Uzbekistan, but they’re still stuck on zero shot attempts.
44′ With halftime looming, Uzbekistan is playing with urgency to capture some momentum. But they’re having a hard time chaining progressive passes through this Colombian press. With the goal conceded, they’ll have to change tactics if they want to get something out of this match.
40′ – GOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!! The Uzbeks manage a couple of key blocks, but the ball recycles to Colombia, and they find the right pass this time. Díaz plays a gorgeous ball through the center to a streaking Daniel Munoz, who flicks a beautiful volley over the head of the keeper. I can’t decide whether the pass or the finish was prettier. It’s 1-0 to the favorites just before halftime.
37′ – It’s all Díaz now. He takes a beautiful touch to deke the defender and breaks down the left side. His cross is dealt with and recycled, but the Uzbeks clear and draw a foul down the pitch. It’s a brief respite for a defense under heavy pressure.
34′ – Díaz tests Khusanov, the excellent Man City prospect, down the left side. A reckless challenge results in a yellow for Uzbekistan’s star center-back, a significant development in this game. The ensuing free kick is put up deep, but a weak header is claimed by the keeper. Colombia can smell the goal as we’re ten minutes away from halftime.
32′ – SO NEARLY!!! Luis Díaz gets loose coming down the left side and rips a scorcher under the arm of the goalkeeper, who may have gotten a touch. It clangs off the inside of the post and requires some clearance from the Uzbek defense. That was so nearly the opener for Colombia, and the momentum is on their side.
31′ – Uzbekistan nearly gets a counter up the gut of the Colombian defense, but Jhon Lucumi recovers well to deny a shot attempt.
29′ – Colombia’s field switching looks good, but they’re failing to connect on their progressive passes. The Uzbek defense has hardly been pressed so far as we’re one-third of the way through this match.
24′ – We’re at the first advertising break. The Colombians, despite having the ball 71% of the time, managed only four touches in the Uzbek six-yard box, and one optimistic shot at the net. They’ll have to dial up the pressure, or risk heading into the locker room in a deadlock. Uzbekistan is awfully content to sit back and defend.
21′ – 20 minutes in, and it’s still Colombia dominating the ball, but little action. Only one combined shot attempt between the two sides as they’re still feeling each other out. The Uzbeks certainly won’t be mad with 20 scoreless minutes in their first-ever World Cup game.
17′ – CHANCE!!! Colombia gets its first shot with Jhon Arias bearing down the right side. He uncorks a burner that strikes off the side of the net. It would have been a banger if it went. A good early sign for Colombia.
11′ – Through ten minutes, Colombia is winning the possession battle 65% to 35%. But neither side has produced a real chance.
8′ – Now we do get a yellow. Johan Mojica is shown the first card of the game, giving Uzbekistan a free kick in the same spot. This time around, the cross is of poor quality and is dealt with easily. But a card this early bears watching for the Colombians.
5′ – Now it’s the Colombians winning a free kick, this time down the left. It’s close to a yellow card. Another good cross into the box, but the Uzbeks clear it with ease to deal with the threat.
2′ – Uzbekistan gets the first chance with a free kick won down the right side. It’s a good cross into the box, but the Colombian defense passes the first test and clears the ball.
1′ – We are underway in Estadio Azteca!!! Uzbekistan’s first-ever World Cup begins. Get ready for some action.
