2015: Golden State Warriors Win NBA Championship
The Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-97 in Game 6 at Quicken Loans Arena to clinch their first NBA title since 1975. Andre Iguodala, who didn’t enter the starting lineup until Game 4, earned Finals MVP honors for his two-way play against LeBron James. 2014: Tony Gwynn Dies at 54
Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn lost his battle with salivary gland cancer in Poway, California. Gwynn spent all 20 seasons with the San Diego Padres, earning eight batting titles, tied for the most in National League history. His .338 career average was the highest since Ted Williams retired. He hit .394 during the strike-shortened 1994 season, the closest anyone had come to .400 in six decades. Gwynn entered the Hall of Fame in 2007 with 97.6% of the vote.
2019: Gary Woodland Wins U.S. Open at Pebble Beach
Gary Woodland captured his first major championship with a 13-under 271 at Pebble Beach, finishing three strokes clear of Brooks Koepka. Woodland held the lead through the final round and sealed the win with a clutch chip on the par-three 17th hole. It was the breakthrough victory for a player who had long been considered one of the longest hitters on tour without a signature win.
2014: Germany Routs Portugal 4-0 at FIFA World Cup
Thomas Muller scored a hat trick as Germany dismantled Portugal in their 2014 World Cup opener in Salvador, Brazil. Pepe’s red card for a headbutt in the 37th minute compounded Portugal’s misery. In the same session, the United States defeated Ghana 2-1 when John Brooks headed in a late winner in the 86th minute. Clint Dempsey had opened the scoring just 30 seconds after kickoff, the fifth-fastest goal in World Cup history at the time.
2006: Argentina Delivers World Cup Classic
Argentina produced one of the great World Cup group-stage performances, demolishing Serbia and Montenegro 6-0 in Gelsenkirchen.
