Everything You Need to Know Before Cape Fear Episode 3
Quite a bit went down during our series-opening episodes last week. A quick breakdown:
- Max Cady has been in prison for 17 years for the murder of his pregnant wife. At the start of the episode, Max’s mistress kills herself and leaves behind a letter confessing to the crime. In addition, she provides the murder weapon. As a result of these new revelations, he’s released from prison.
- Max’s defense attorney following the murder, Anna Bowden, convinced him to take a plea deal proposed by lead prosecutor Tom Bowden. Max ended up getting a life sentence anyways. After the case, Anna and Tom ended up getting married. The two now live with their son, Zach, and Anna’s daughter Natalie in Savannah.
- Anna works at the Savannah Justice League Project, a non-profit dedicated to freeing those who are wrongfully imprisoned. At a gala for the organization, Max makes a surprise appearance. As the most famous ex-convict in America, SJLP head Noa Toussaint sees Cady as someone that could help raise publicity and funding.
- Max makes a chilling return into Anna’s life, much to the suspicion of both her and Tom. Later in episode one, the couple realizes that Zack has gone missing.
- Zach eventually returns to the Bowden home, albeit with a bloody foot. After taking off his sneaker, Anna and Tom realize their son is missing one of his toes. The teenager, who was drugged and unresponsive, is immediately rushed to the hospital.
- While at the hospital, Anna runs into none other than Max. He was arrested that night and broke his finger while resisting. When she begins to confront her nemesis, Zach’s toe is found in disgusting fashion: he vomits it out. The doctor states that it’s plausible he could have bitten it off in a drugged state.
Anna and Tom aren’t dummies; they know that Max is out for revenge. Still, public sympathy very much lies with the man who had 17 years of his life stolen. Zach’s status is something to monitor as well. On top of his missing toe, the teen has been talking to a mysterious ‘girlfriend’ online. Add it all up, and there’s already plenty of uncertainty in Cape Fear.
