The 2026 summer movie season is in full swing, to the point where certain blockbusters are going head-to-head on their opening weekends. Scary Movie and Masters of the Universe both hit theaters on June 5, injecting new life into the box office lineup that already boasted Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and a pair of horror hits in Obsession and Backrooms. So which flick took the top spot – the modern reimagining of He-Man or Anna Faris, Regina Hall and the Wayans brothers’ return to their horror movie parody franchise?
Here is a breakdown of how Scary Movie performed at the box office this past weekend:
Scary Movie Box Office
Scary Movie made $54.3 million at the box office between June 5 and June 7 – a new high-mark for the six-film series. The last installment in the franchise, Scary Movie V, opened to $14.1 million back in April 2013, although that one did not feature Anna Faris or Regina Hall. The original Scary Movie grossed $42.4 million in its opening weekend in July 2000, only for Scary Movie 2 to open to just $20.5 million the following summer. Scary Movie 3 rebounded with a $48.1 million opening weekend in October 2003, followed by Scary Movie 4‘s $40.2 million opening weekend in April 2006.
According to Deadline and Variety, Scary Movie made $7.7 million in Thursday night previews on June 4. That cash is counted as part of the film’s $24.7 million Friday gross. Scary Movie now owns the No. 9 domestic opening weekend of 2026 so far, trailing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Project Hail Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scream 7, Backrooms and Hoppers. Beyond that, Scary Movie now owns the largest opening weekend by a traditional, R-rated studio comedy since 22 Jump Street in 2014. For comparison, another IP-based parody film – The Naked Gun – opened to $16.8 million in August 2025.
Looking beyond the United States and Canada, Scary Movie reeled in an additional $50.5 million overseas. In total, the film grossed $104.8 million worldwide over its opening weekend. The first Scary Movie remains the franchise’s highest-grossing film worldwide at $227.2 million, followed by Scary Movie 4 at $178.7 million, Scary Movie 3 at $155.2 million and Scary Movie 2 at $141.2 million. Historically, the franchise has earned roughly 46% of its box office gross from non-North American markets.
