White Sox vs. Phillies prediction, preview
Chicago White Sox
I dare you to show me a single analyst, pundit, whoever that took the White Sox to have a winning record this year. Much less, for them to compete for the AL Central title. Yet here are are on June 6 with Chicago 33-30 and just two games shy of first. With 4.75 runs per game and a .738 OPS, this is a top-10 offense in baseball. The White Sox are slashing .240/.325/.412 with the fifth-best ISO at .172. They’ve also blasted 87 homers, third most in baseball, but there drawback is that they have a 24.0% K% that’s one of the MLB’s highest. Still, the Sox are top-eight in wOBA, wRC and wRAA, so this surge is no accident. The run differential is just +9 though, a sign that the pitching needs some work. Chicago’s team ERA is 4.32 with a 1.31 WHIP and a 11.1% K-BB% that’s on the lower end. The numbers are nearly identical if you narrow it down to the bullpen alone, too. That unit has a 4.32 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 10.5% K-BB%, while a 69.8% LOB% is 22nd.
LHP Brandon Eisert gets his second start after making 12 appearances on the year for Chicago. The veteran has a 3.55 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 12.2 IP, also striking out 13 hitters. His fastball velocity is in the second percentile at just 89.3 mph, but he’s largely performed well in terms of xERA and xBA so far in a limited sample. He’ll likely see just a couple of innings at most, though.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies began the season in miserable fashion and were off to their worst start in two decades, but the hiring of Don Mattingly has turned things around. Since April 28, the team’s .714 winning percentage is the best in baseball. Philly is now 34-29 and second in the NL East, also going 8-2 over its last 10 outings and winning four straight. The Phils have a run differential of -20 and score 3.97 runs per game with an OPS of .682 that falls third-to-last in baseball. The team has a .225/.296/.386 slash line, but a .158 ISO is more than respectable and they’ve mashed 78 homers, eighth most. However, they’re also third-to-last in BB/K ratio at 0.35 with a low BB% and a 22.3% K%. The offense has certainly struggled at points, but the arms remain largely quite good. The Phillies’ team ERA is still 4.00 with a 1.29 ERA and MLB-best 17.6% K-BB%. The bullpen’s numbers are similar at a 3.87 ERA, plus identical WHIP and K-BB% marks.
Starting for Philadelphia today is RHP Andrew Painter. He’s just 1-6 in 11 appearances, 10 of which were starts, with a 5.74 ERA. His WHIP is 1.52 and he has 43 strikeouts across 53.1 IP. His average exit velocity allowed is on the better side and he has a 77th-percentile chase rate with a 70th-percentile BB%. However, the results have not been good.
White Sox vs. Phillies pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Phillies as -136 Moneyline favorites at home today. The White Sox come in with +113 odds to win outright. The total sits at 10 combined runs between these two teams.
Best Bet: CHI White Sox 1st 5 innings (+100)
Maybe this is something of a vibes pick with Philly so hot lately, but I actually really like Chicago to win the first five innings. The Phillies haven’t seen much more success against lefties like Eisert, and the southpaw certainly has been better than Painter this season even if they’ve played different roles. Eisert should handle business early on. Plus, Painter doesn’t exactly have great strikeout stuff either, which is one of the best ways to get the better of the White Sox. That has me feeling pretty good about the first couple of innings, and if the Sox can put a couple runs on the board with their superior bats, they can hold on to help us cash this pick at even money.
