Houston Astros vs. Athletics prediction, pick for MLB on Friday 6/05/26

The Athletics and Astros open a three-game set at Daikin Park with both teams carrying unstable recent form. Oakland enters at 30-32 after taking two of three at Wrigley Field, then losing a 6-3 ninth-inning lead in Thursday’s finale. Houston sits 28-36 and 2-4 on its current nine-game homestand after following an 11-9 comeback win with a 5-1 loss to Pittsburgh. The Astros went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position Thursday, while Oakland hit four homers in Chicago and still left with a bullpen bruise. That combination gives this game a strange texture: two offenses with loud top-half bats, two pitching plans with clear stress points, and a late-inning environment that can reopen the scoring. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Houston Astros and the Athletics.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Astros vs. Athletics prediction, preview

Jack Perkins is the most important variable. MLB lists him at 2-2 with a 5.46 ERA and 33 strikeouts, but that surface line hides a more complicated profile. Perkins has worked 17 games, all in relief, covering 28 innings with a 26.4% strikeout rate, 5.6% walk rate, 0.32 HR/9, 3.14 FIP, 2.60 xFIP, and 3.82 SIERA. His 96.2 mph four-seamer, 31.8% sweeper usage, and 17.9% changeup usage give him legitimate bat-missing traits. The sweeper has generated a 40% whiff rate, while the changeup has produced a 45.1% whiff rate. The issue is role, not raw stuff. Perkins is making his first start of the season because Oakland’s rotation has been gutted by injuries to Aaron Civale and Luis Severino. Even if he survives Houston’s first look, volume and bullpen exposure remain live problems.

Peter Lambert gives Houston more traditional starter length, but Oakland has a direct path to traffic. Lambert enters at 4-4 with a 3.77 ERA and 43 strikeouts across 45.1 innings. His contact profile is useful, with 0.40 HR/9, a 4.9% barrel rate allowed, 88.9 mph average exit velocity allowed, and a .310 xwOBA allowed. The crack is the walk rate. Lambert has walked 11.1% of hitters, which matters against an Oakland order built to stack baserunners before the damage bats. His four-seamer has also carried most of the risk in the arsenal. If Oakland forces fastballs in leverage counts, Lambert’s low-barrel season line can still bend into multi-run innings.

The A’s top half has more statistical weight than their team brand suggests. Carlos Cortes is hitting .322/.406/.503 with a 154 wRC+, 11.5% walk rate, and 9.7% strikeout rate. Nick Kurtz has been even better, sitting at .284/.437/.500 with 11 homers, a .216 ISO, 20.6% walk rate, .410 wOBA, and 160 wRC+. His contact quality is elite, with a 94.2 mph average exit velocity, 57.7% hard-hit rate, and 18.2% barrel rate. Shea Langeliers brings the cleanest power, carrying a .289/.358/.557 slash, 16 homers, .268 ISO, .395 wOBA, 150 wRC+, 92.1 mph average exit velocity, and 15.4% barrel rate. Tyler Soderstrom adds the current-form bridge, with a .358/.443/.623 line, three homers, and eight walks over his last 15 games. If Brent Rooker is active behind that group, Oakland’s first five can punish Lambert’s traffic.

Houston’s case is more top-heavy, but the top is massive. Yordan Alvarez is hitting .316/.428/.649 with 21 homers, a .333 ISO, .452 wOBA, and 192 wRC+. His batted-ball indicators are even louder: 94.9 mph average exit velocity, 54.4% hard-hit rate, 18.9% barrel rate, and a .493 xwOBA. Jeremy Peña gives Houston the table-setter it needs, hitting .298/.351/.433 with a 121 wRC+ and only a 14% strikeout rate. Over his last 15 games, he has 20 hits, three homers, nine RBI, 15 runs, and two steals. Christian Walker remains volatile, but his 16 homers, .247 ISO, and 124 wRC+ keep the middle order dangerous. Isaac Paredes just hit his eighth homer and 100th career shot, while Cam Smith delivered the go-ahead triple in Houston’s 11-9 comeback against Pittsburgh.

Athletics vs. Astros pick, best bet

The roof should neutralize weather, but the bullpen layer keeps the full-game scoring path open. Oakland’s relief group just melted down in Chicago, with Scott Barlow, Luis Medina, and Joel Kuhnel all carrying recent workload. Kuhnel was charged with four ninth-inning runs Thursday, while Barlow has thrown 81 pitches over the last week. Houston is healthier with Josh Hader back, but that does not solve every bridge inning. The Astros’ bullpen owned a 5.16 ERA when Hader returned, and Bryan Abreu’s 7.52 ERA and 7.53 FIP remain a pressure point before the ninth. Houston’s late relief is improved, but this is still not a clean shutdown environment.

The best bet is Over 9 runs (-102). Houston has the best hitter in the game, a hot leadoff bat, and a full-game path against a starter converting from relief. Oakland has a better offensive spine than the market usually prices, with Cortes, Kurtz, Langeliers, and Soderstrom all creating different problems for Lambert’s walk rate. The side is thin because Perkins’ underlying numbers are better than his ERA, and Lambert has suppressed barrels well enough to avoid a pure starter fade. The total is cleaner. It captures Perkins’ uncertain workload, Lambert’s baserunner risk, both top-half lineups, and two bullpens still carrying late-inning volatility.

Best bet: Over 9 runs (-102)
Projected score: Astros 6, Athletics 5

Best bet: Astros vs. Athletics o9.0 runs (+100)
