After missing the first two games of the Western Conference Finals with a sprained ankle, Fox has played in the last six. But the injury appears to still be bothering him, as he is averaging just 10.5 PPG while shooting 35% from the field over this stretch. Fox has fallen short of 14.5 points in four of these six and he has scored single-digits in three of these tilts.
In Wednesday’s Game 1 vs. the Knicks, Fox was held to just seven points in 37 minutes on 3-of-13 shooting. This felt like deja vu, as Fox also scored just seven points when he last faced New York in March. The guard clearly isn’t 100% right now and likely wouldn’t be playing if this wasn’t the playoffs.
Coming off the bench, Dylan Harper has been far more effective than Fox, as the former has scored 18, 12, and 16 points in the last three. Harper receiving more minutes and Fox seeing a smaller workload in Game 2 would be a logical move by the Spurs’ coaching staff and is a real possibility. Nevertheless, even if Fox approaches 40 minutes again, him staying under 14.5 points is likely given his poor form and how well New York’s defense is playing. The Knicks rank first in defensive rating this postseason and they have held their opponent to 95 points or less in three of their last four.
