Two of the top contenders heading into the 2026 WNBA season, this matchup was already primed to be cinema. Now this Fever-Dream matchup is the center of the Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark rivalry. Two excellent teams, two excellent players, and a whole lot of bad blood. What else could you want?

Dream vs. Fever Preview
It all starts with defense for the Dream. They were already a strong group, and adding Angel Reese has put them over the top. So far, Atlanta has the second-best defensive rating in the league and owns a 6-2 record. No surprise, Reese’s addition has made them the best rebounding team in the W, and their defensive shot profile is inspiring. Atlanta allows the fewest three-pointers and free throws in the league, forcing teams to challenge Reese in the paint or win in the midrange. It’s an awfully difficult equation for their opponents.
Offense is another question. Atlanta continues to take a lot of threes and spread the ball around — typical of Karl Smesko’s offenses — but the early results have been subpar. But with this kind of defensive base, they have time to figure things out.
Indiana is having struggles in general. At 4-4, they’ve been a disappointment. Some wins are needed to put their off-court struggles behind them. Caitlin Clark is at the center of it for all the wrong reasons; her on-court antics and spats with referees have boiled over to Indiana’s sideline.
The Fever are doing fine offensively, but the defense has taken a big step back from last season. Teams are starting to catch on to Clark’s defensive struggles and are attacking her relentlessly. That puts a lot of pressure on Aliyah Boston to keep the paint clean, while making it more difficult for Lexie Hull to make an impact as a perimeter defender.
This matchup is much more interesting because of the strengths and weaknesses of these teams. Will Atlanta’s tepid offense find a rhythm against this struggling Fever defense? And can Indiana’s offense do damage against a prolific defense?
