But the Detroit Tigers, who have made the playoffs in the last two seasons, are in a free fall. Who wins in this battle of first vs. worst?

First things first, let’s get to know these starting pitchers.
Troy Melton steps to the bump for Detroit. Mostly used as a relief option as a rookie in 2025, Melton is moving into a full-time starter role in Tarik Skubal’s absence. So far, so good; Melton holds a 1.49 ERA over his first two starts. At 6’4″, Melton gets a ton of extension on his pitches and throws his fastball awfully hard, averaging 96.1 MPH on his four-seamer.
With Skubal being shopped around while Detroit’s season hangs on life support, it’s possible Melton has a full-time rotation job up for grabs. These starts will be crucial to seizing that.
Opposite him is Nick Martinez. The veteran swingman signed with the Rays in what was perhaps his last gasp as a big leaguer. Leave it to Tampa Bay to get the most out of a player on his last legs. The 35-year-old has a 1.62 ERA over 66.2 innings, producing ace-like results at bargain prices. Mostly a sinker-changeup pitcher, Martinez hardly walks anybody while inducing lots of soft contact.
Tampa Bay’s offense has been surprisingly robust. The trio of Junior Caminero, Yandy Diaz, and Jonathan Aranda brings the power. They have speed up and down the lineup, and plenty of platoon players to keep things fresh. So far, they’re top-10 in wRC+ as a group, a promising sign for their season-long outlook.
Detroit’s offense has been a flop despite a lot of big names. Riley Greene is having a monster year, Kevin McGonigle has hit the ground running, and Dillon Dingler has been excellent. It’s the rest of the team that is failing to hold up. Spencer Torkelson has regressed, Javy Baez and Gleyber Torres have struggled to hit while dealing with injuries, and their deep group of utility-type players has come up empty. On top of that, Detroit has the third-worst defense according to FanGraphs. They need to come up with some answers, or some big names could hit the trade block.

It’s awfully hard to place trust in this Tigers team. Melton has great stuff and should be able to keep things tight, but their offense is going to struggle against Martinez and this Rays bullpen. A bit of sloppy defense from both teams could shake things up, but I expect both starting pitchers to do well, with Tampa Bay picking up the win.
