Out in the NL East tonight, the Washington Nationals start a three-game homestand against the Miami Marlins. The Nats have been shockingly competitive this season and bring the highest-scoring offense in the MLB, while the Marlins are trying to break a recent skid and improve on the sport’s worst road record.
Here’s a betting prediction and pick for tonight’s matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Marlins vs. Nationals prediction, preview
Miami Marlins
What was once a quality start to the campaign for the Marlins has quickly deteriorated over the last few weeks. Now just 26-34 and last in the NL East, they went 11-18 last month and have now dropped five straight contests. The bats are slumping in comparison to an already mid campaign that has them at 4.17 runs per game and the 22nd-ranked OPS at .692. The full slash line reads .242/.318/.373, with slugging a clear weakness thanks to a .131 ISO that ranks fifth-to-last. Miami’s 46 home runs are third fewest as well. The Marlins have an 0.40 BB/K, too. If nothing else, they’ve underperformed overall with a .296 BABIP that sits 10th in the MLB. In terms of arm talent, the Marlins are 21st in ERA at 4.38 and bring a 1.28 WHIP with a 12.8% K-BB%. They’re far from bad in that regard, amassing a 4.05 FIP that implies they’ve had some poor fielding play a role. The bullpen is also 11th in ERA at 3.65 with a 1.20 WHIP and 13.0% K-BB%, numbers that make for one of the MLB’s better units.
Miami sends RHP Sandy Alcantara to the mound with a 3-4 record in 12 starts. He holds a 4.66 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 75.1 IP, hardly the season the club wanted to see from the former star after a down year in 2025. His fastball velocity remains potent at 97.2 mph and he has an excellent 6.5% BB% while sitting above average in barrel and hard-hit rate. However, he’s been quite unlucky and is far underperforming a 3.79 xERA. He’s thrown once against the Nats this season, allowing five hits, two earned runs, two walks and striking out three.
Washington Nationals
Meanwhile, the Nats are surprisingly competitive in spite of the low expectations heading into the year. They’re second in the NL East at 31-29 and are 6-4 over their last 10 games. Washington averages an MLB-leading 5.40 runs per game with a .746 OPS that ranks fourth best, slashing .246/.325/.421. The bats’ pop is impressive with a .175 ISO and 77 homers, the latter of which ranks sixth in the sport. The Nationals are also ninth in BB/K ratio at 0.44 with the fourth-best wOBA at .330. The arms are certainly in need of improvement, though. The team’s ERA of 4.63 comes in at 25th with a 1.38 WHIP and 10.7% K-BB%. A 1.36 HR/9 ratio is among the worst in the sport. The Washington bullpen also needs some work, amassing a 4.52 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a paltry 8.0% K-BB%. This team is lucky its batters are so capable; otherwise the record may look much worse.
For the Nats, RHP Cade Cavalli makes his 13th start after going 3-3 thus far. He has a 3.62 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 68 Ks across 59.2 IP. He’s a bit prone to giving up hits, particularly hard ones, but he brings solid velo at 96.3 mph and has an above-average K% at 25.4%. He’s thrown once against the Marlins this season, going 5.2 innings with four hits, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts.
Marlins vs. Nationals pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Nationals as -144 Moneyline favorites at home tonight. The Marlins come in with +119 odds to win outright. The total sits at eight combined runs between these two teams.
Best Bet: WAS Nationals -1.5 (+141)
Miami has the MLB’s worst away record at a dismal 8-19 on the year so far, which doesn’t bode well whatsoever heading into this game. The Marlins’ OPS on the road sits at .656 even despite a .294 BABIP that ranks ninth in baseball, so for whatever reason, they just can’t seem to produce. That’s a trend backed by the 3.85 runs per game they average on the road, seventh worst of any team. Meanwhile, Washington’s scoring average at home comes in at an elevated 5.59 runs per game, a pretty significant increase from the 5.23 on the road themselves. The difference between offenses and results for these starters thus far should prove enough to secure a win for the Nats at their own ballpark tonight, especially with their opponent in the midst of a pretty rough cold stretch.
