Every four years we are treated to the best tournament in soccer, and it’s always filled with star names who reach their fullest potential when the lights are the brightest. This year’s tournament will be no different, and it’s as much of a star-studded affair as we could hope for. Below I will break down Group A of the group stage that features Mexico, South Korea, Czechia and South Africa.
Prediction
It makes sense that Mexico, one of the host nations of the tournament, are the favorites to win Group A. Having home field advantage is crucial, especially when you’re playing in the heat of the summer. They are also the highest ranked team in the group in terms of the FIFA World Rankings, where they sit at #15 in the world. South Kora are next at #25, followed by Czechia at #41 and South Africa at #60.
Mexico are the best team in this group, and they are going to be cheered on by the home crowd in every single match. The question for them will be the rust factor, as they did not have to go through qualifying for this tournament as a host nation. Will the lack of competitive matches play a part? There’s only one way to find out.
Fulham’s Raúl Jiménez and West Ham’s Edson Álvarez are the two experienced players in this group that will look to lead the younger players to the top of this group. Jiménez had 12 goal contributions this season for Fulham, while Álvarez spent the season on loan at Fenerbahce as they narrowly missed out on the Turkish league title.
Mexico typically reaches the Round of 16 in the World Cup. They missed out on that in 2022, but qualified for the knockout rounds in each of the previous seven tournaments. I expect this group to get to that point, especially with the home field advantage.
Prediction: Mexico to win Group A (-110)
Dark Horse
I think Mexico will win the group, but don’t count out Czechia. They took out a strong Denmark squad in route to the World Cup in the UEFA qualifying playoffs, and have some quality talent across the pitch. Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick is their main man up top, and Schick has all the ability to give every team problems. He’s scored 37 goals in the Bundesliga over the last two seasons. I would back Czechia to finish second in this group, followed by South Korea and South Africa in that order.
