Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins prediction, pick for MLB on Friday 5/22/26

Boston comes back to Fenway at 22-27 with a three-game winning streak, a six-game homestand opening in front of it and a little more oxygen around a season that spent most of May looking stalled. Minnesota arrives at 23-27, third in the AL Central, still dangerous at the top with Byron Buxton back in the leadoff spot, but thinned by Ryan Jeffers’ injury and Royce Lewis’ demotion. The matchup is lefty-on-lefty: Connor Prielipp for the Twins, Payton Tolle for the Red Sox. Prielipp just gave Minnesota six strong innings against Milwaukee; Tolle is coming off a career-high eight-inning start against Atlanta. Boston’s larger question is simpler than the pitching card: can a lineup that went nine straight games without scoring more than three runs before Tuesday carry its Kansas City momentum home? Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Red Sox vs. Twins prediction, preview

Tolle gives Boston the cleaner run-prevention base. He enters with a 2.05 ERA, 2.44 FIP, 3.20 xFIP, 8.80 K/9, 2.05 BB/9, 0.88 HR/9, 0.78 WHIP and 30 strikeouts, and his Statcast page backs the surface line with a .228 wOBA allowed, .250 xwOBA, 89.4 mph average exit velocity, 39.0% hard-hit rate and 7.8% barrel rate. The one warning sign is shape: a 31.1% ground-ball rate and 23.0-degree average launch angle can give Buxton, Josh Bell and Brooks Lee air contact if Tolle lives up. Prielipp has his own swing-and-miss argument with a 2.88 ERA, 3.08 xERA, .185 xBA, .365 xSLG, .267 wOBA, .280 xwOBA, 28.4% strikeout rate and 8.8% walk rate, but the contact underneath his start is louder: 90.6 mph average exit velocity, 40.3% hard-hit rate, 11.5% barrel rate, 17.3-degree average launch angle and 32.3% sweet-spot rate. Fenway can turn that profile into wall balls and two-run innings without needing cheap home runs.

The confirmed Boston order gives the handicap enough bat-to-ball and extra-base paths to challenge Prielipp across nine innings. Jarren Duran leads off after homering in back-to-back wins, including a three-run shot Tuesday and a go-ahead two-run homer Wednesday, and he added a triple in the sweep-clincher. Ceddanne Rafaela hits second with a .287/.353/.439 line, .354 wOBA, 121 wRC+, .153 ISO, 7.8% barrel rate and a 38.1% sweet-spot rate. Wilyer Abreu sits third at .292/.359/.438, .353 wOBA, 121 wRC+, 9.7% walk rate, 19.4% strikeout rate and .146 ISO. Willson Contreras is the best middle-order bat in the game for this angle: 10 HR, .269/.369/.497, .228 ISO, .380 wOBA, 139 wRC+, 10.1% walk rate, and a five-game hitting streak noted at 9-for-20 entering the opener. Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard, Marcelo Mayer, Carlos Narváez and Caleb Durbin are not a clean bottom half, but Boston has five right-handed or switch bats in the order, plus Duran and Abreu getting the platoon disadvantage with enough current form or contact skill to stay relevant.

Twins vs. Red Sox pick, best bet

Prielipp is not some loose rookie walking into a bad spot; he struck out eight Brewers over six innings, held them to three hits and two runs, and has kept opponents to a .280 xwOBA with a strikeout rate near 28%. Minnesota’s lineup also has enough counterpunch for a full-game under to get uncomfortable: Buxton has 15 HR, Bell just went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI against Houston, Austin Martin owns the right-handed contact profile to bother a lefty, and Kody Clemens gets Fenway with the Roger Clemens backdrop already baked into the series. The difference is Boston’s path is broader. The Red Sox have the stronger split against left-handed pitching at .273 average and .742 OPS, with that split ranking ninth in MLB, while Minnesota is closer to .244/.350/.368 and .718 OPS against lefties. Prielipp can win the first trip through the order and still leave Boston four innings to cash traffic against a bullpen that ranks 28th by ERA at 5.00 with a 1.536 WHIP and six blown saves on the season.

The board is awkward because the cleanest team is taxed and the early markets are already squeezed. Boston’s moneyline asks for too much on a 22-27 team, even with Tolle and the better late-game structure. The first-five over is expensive into two lefties with K-BB profiles that can absolutely produce a 2-1 or 2-2 start, and Red Sox F5 -0.5 needs Boston to do its damage before Prielipp’s pitch count and Minnesota’s middle relief become part of the game. The safer Boston team total asks for four runs but carries heavy juice. The alternate team total at over 4.5 runs is the first price that pays for the season-long offensive scar tissue, the rookie-starter risk, the Fenway doubles path and the chance Boston’s offense is finally moving from survival mode into something more functional. Ballpark Pal’s market page also frames Boston as a smaller favorite than the board, which makes the side less attractive than the scoring route.

Best bet: Red Sox team total over 4.5 runs (+125). This is a bet on Boston’s current lineup turning the corner at home rather than a cheap fade of Prielipp. Duran’s swing has shown life from the leadoff spot, Rafaela and Abreu are both sitting at 121 wRC+, Contreras gives the order a .380 wOBA cleanup bat, and Prielipp’s 11.5% barrel rate, 17.3-degree launch angle and 90.6 mph average exit velocity fit the Fenway run-chain profile. The failure mode is Prielipp landing the slider early, Boston’s bottom third stranding traffic and the cool weather knocking down the one ball that needs the wall. The payoff is the Red Sox getting Prielipp to 90 pitches by the sixth, turning two extra-base hits into a crooked inning and letting their pitching staff protect a lead.

Final score projection: Red Sox 5, Twins 3.

Best bet: Red Sox TT o4.5 runs (+125) vs. Twins
