Food Network is taking Chopped out of the studio and dropping it into the elements. Chopped Castaways premieres Tuesday, May 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Food Network, with episodes available to stream the next day on HBO Max. The first season runs eight episodes and keeps longtime and legendary Chopped host Ted Allen at the center of the chaos, only this time the pantry has been replaced by sand, surf, open fire and whatever the chefs can earn under pressure.

The premise is built like a bootcamp for chefs who are used to pristine kitchens, calibrated burners and stocked walk-ins. Twelve elite chefs arrive on a remote island and are forced to cook without traditional tools or electricity. Each week, they must build working kitchens from basic supplies, complete survival-driven physical challenges and cook entirely over open flame. The familiar Chopped mystery basket still matters, but the path to those ingredients now runs through challenges like archery, spearfishing, ocean diving and digging in the sand.

Chopped Castaways: preview & format

The Survivor-adjacent format series a sharper shape than a standard spinoff. Chopped has always been about compression: the clock, the basket, the judges, the panic of making something coherent from an ingredient that seems designed to break rhythm. Castaways widens that panic into a physical environment. Fire management, endurance, weather, teamwork and improvisation all become part of the plate. The chefs must work in teams, cook a three-course meal for the judges, and then send the lowest-performing cooks into a head-to-head Gauntlet battle, where one competitor fights back and one is chopped.

Chopped Castaways: contestants and judges

The judging panel is a strong one, with Ted Allen anchoring the island chaos as host. Allen guides the competition and announces which chef leaves the island, while the winner claims $100,000 after a season that begins in teams before shifting into individual competition.
