J.Hud Returns!
Former American Idol contestant and the youngest female EGOT winner of all-time, Jennifer Hudson returned to the show this week as a celebrity judge and mentor for the Top 9 ahead of Disney Night.
Daniel Stallworth: A Whole New World (Aladdin)
After putting a funky twist on Livin’ On A Prayer last week, Daniel slowed things down tonight and got to showcase his powerful vocals with his rendition of A Whole New World. Filled with heart, Stallworth’s most comfortable performance yet on American Idol kicked off the night in strong fashion.
Grade: A-
Braden Rumfelt: Remember Me (Coco)
A slow start was redeemed by a memorable (no pun intended) series of high notes from Rumfelt to keep his chances of advancing alive. It wasn’t his strongest performance, but his stage presence and falsetto delivered when called upon.
Grade: B
Lucas Leon: Life Is a Highway (Cars)
An electric performer, Leon took on the legendary Rascal Flatts number and came through with a much more confident performance than last week’s, owning the stage with the help of his electric guitar and flashing elite potential.
Grade: B+
Hannah Harper: Almost There (The Princess and the Frog)
Fresh off one of the best performances of the season with her rendition of Landslide, it was always going to be a tough act to follow for Hannah this week. She was determined to showcase more stage presence after “freezing” a couple weeks ago, and Harper delivered. Hannah’s inflection really came through, putting her stamp on the song en route to another excellent outing.
Grade: A
Chris Tungseth: Let It Go (Frozen)
This was an extremely ambitious attempt by Chris, which deserves massive props on the biggest stage of his life. To take it even a step further, he turned it into a rock rendition. When he found a rhythm about halfway through, he took it to a level I truly did not expect heading into the performance.
Grade: A-
Keyla Richardson: Circle of Life (The Lion King)
Jennifer Hudson sang this song 22 years ago, and now she was presented with the opportunity to mentor a contestant through it. Keyla took advantage of the chance, really going for it. Richardson was awarded a standing ovation and Hudson’s stamp of approval for arguably the best number of the night.
Grade: A

Brooks Rosser: The Climb (Hannah Montana: The Movie)
Implored to find more confidence in his incredible vocals by J.Hud, Brooks pushed his unique voice from start to finish, flexing a few mini-runs right off the bat. It didn’t quite match Keyla or Hannah’s performances, falling short of an A, but his sound is undeniable. He then hard-launched a relationship with former contestant Rae!
Grade: A-
Jordan McCullough: Colors of the Wind (Pocahontas)
The top performer of the season thus far came out swinging with another ambitious song in Colors of the Wind, proving that there may not be a song he can’t tackle with apparent ease. McCullough simply reaches a level that I haven’t seen from another contestant this season, giving us another truly immaculate production.
Grade: A+
Kyndal Inskeep: Butterfly Fly Away (Hannah Montana: The Movie)
Kyndal wasn’t at her best last week after losing her voice, but America found her unique sound convincing enough to grant her another round. This week, she returned at full strength and bounced back. She flexed the vocals on occasion, specifically finishing strong.
Grade: B+
