Lawson, Maul, Devon and Master Eeko-Dio Daki were all hoping to avoid any Imperial entanglements — that’s the real trick, isn’t it? Well, they better get ready because the Empire has arrived on Janix.
The fifth and sixth episodes of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, the new Disney+ animated series starring Sam Witwer, drop on April 20. New episodes will drop weekly through the May 4 finale.

The next two chapters of the series are titled “Inquisition” and “Night of the Hunted.” New episodes will drop every Monday at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT. In last week’s third episode, “Whispers in the Unknown” we see Maul operating quite a bit in the shadows as he is trying to put his hook into Devon. Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord Episode 3 and 4 recap
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
- The major story of episodes 3 and 4 was Maul’s attempts to corrupt Devon. He tries to convince her that despite what she’s been told about him, they aren’t that dissimilar. Both felt certain of their futures, only to have it prematurely ripped away from them against their will. In the age of the Empire, they’re doing what they must to survive, and surely Devon in the days since the fall of the Jedi can relate (playing into Devon’s frustration in the premiere that Master Daki won’t concede to theft in order to eat). Maul further presses that like Devon, his family was murdered … by the same enemy who destroyed the Jedi Order. Maul says Devon’s frustration betrays her, and he sees potential. Maul wants to train Devon to reach that potential because he needs an ally to fight their common enemy. He stokes her resentment going from a respected guardian of the peace to a wanted fugitive living hand to mouth. Devon almost escapes, but Maul blocks her. She says to let her pass, she’s not afraid of him, but Maul counters she’s not afraid just weak. He twists the knife, saying she has no purpose, no hope. Her future was robbed from her yet she sits idle. She was one of the few Jedi to survive but she is squandering that gift. He continues to anger and frustrate her, saying her life is in ruin. She fights in anger and is able to knock Maul down and open an escape route. She tries to run off with Maul’s lightsaber, which is speaking to her, but he calls it back. Either way, the hook is in.
- In the fourth episode, we see Devon indulging in her urge to act, arguing with Daki that instead of leaving the planet immediately they should confront Maul and bring him to justice. Daki tells her to be careful and to not let her judgment be clouded by her need for vengeance, but the Jedi Master sends Maul’s location to Lawson, and the pair watch as Lawson’s team raids Maul’s hideout. Devon and Daki end up dueling with Maul. Maul had a feeling she would return and hoped she would bring her Master. Daki tells Maul to surrender and he will be unharmed, but Maul asks when has that passive ideology ever served the Jedi? Hasn’t he learned his lesson? Maul says they survive but they do not live. He says with their power and abilities they should lead and be respected by all not crawl on hands and knees begging to survive. Daki says their powers are meant to be used only in the service of others. Maul says it is their unwillingness to use their power that makes them weak. All of this is meant to further remind Devon of what she is not taking that could be hers. However, in this duel he doesn’t yet win her to his side, as she stops Maul from dealing a death blow to Daki, who after they escape with help from Lawson apologizes for failing her.
- Speaking of Lawson, cracks are forming in his partnership with Two-Boots. The droid wants to follow protocol and bring in Imperial support to deal with Maul, but Lawson is adamant that once the Empire arrives they’ll never leave. They ruin lives, he says. It turns out there may be a personal element to this, as Two-Boots points out that Lawson’s former wife now works for the Empire. Eventually, Two-Boots tries to go over Lawson’s head to call in the Empire and after learning Maul’s location is even more adamant that they can’t handle Maul and doing so themselves only puts their people in danger. Lawson has to shut Two-Boots down before going on the raid of Maul’s hideout. It goes about as well as Two-Boots had predicted for Lawson’s strike team, as when Lawson turns down Maul’s protection offer — Maul will not trouble the city so long as he is allowed to operate unimpeded — his team is decimated by Maul’s mercenaries. As the authorities are tending to their dead and wounded, Lawson apologizes for to Two-Boots for shutting him down. Two-Boots forgives him, while hoping that Lawson can forgive him as well. Because he’s called in the Empire. Menacingly, a star destroyer arrives over Janix as the fourth episode comes to a close.
- Swaying Devon to the Dark Side wasn’t Maul’s only bit of business this week, as he plan to gain his retribution on Krim comes to fruition. He uses Vario to get close to Krim and has one of his Zabrak loyalists serve as a decoy so he can put Krim in a position to be killed without any interference from the Pyke guards. Maul reveals that he was alone and weak after the “tragic events on Mandalore” so he went to his old ally seeking safe haven, but Krim tried to kill him. He failed and Maul says this is what awaits all who have betrayed him (watch out, Vario). The remaining Pyke guards kneel to him and Maul puts the lead guard, Kalt, nominally in charge, but he answers to Maul.
So, Maul pitched a plan to Lawson where both sides could have peace without the grip of the Empire around either of their throats. Now, however, there’s no doubt that the Empire will be calling the shots on Janix moving forward. That’s likely not good for anyone — Maul, Devon and Daki or Lawson and the people of Janix. We’ll have to see how this all alters Maul’s grand plans.
