PNC Park has already turned this series into Scoresville, USA. Washington has taken four of its last five, opened the year 9-8, and is hitting .270/.342/.427 with 99 runs, 161 hits, and 20 home runs. Pittsburgh is 8-9, but the Pirates showed their ceiling immediately with a 16-run outburst in the opener before leaving traffic all over the field in Tuesday’s 5-4 loss, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Pirates vs. Nationals prediction, preview
Washington owns the better surface production—.270 average vs .249, .427 slugging vs .397, and a 99–86 edge in runs scored—with a slightly stronger hit volume and comparable power output at 20 home runs apiece. But the contact profile underneath the matchup flips the edge. Jake Irvin (SP) is allowing 91.5 mph average exit velocity, a 52.5% hard-hit rate, and a massive 20.0% barrel rate, paired with a 24.8° average launch angle that keeps the ball in the air. That is not neutral contact—that is elevated damage with real extra-base implications. Mason Montgomery (SP) has been volatile at 6.14 ERA, but his expected line is cleaner with a .310 xwOBA and a 13.3% barrel rate, suggesting less consistent damage when hitters do connect. Washington has been the better offense in a vacuum. Pittsburgh gets the better version of contact to attack tonight, which is why the market is pricing them as the stronger side.
The player layer is where that advantage turns from theory into something tangible. CJ Abrams (SS) is carrying Washington at .356/.426/.695 with six home runs and 19 RBI, and his recent form is the reason the Nationals are scoring at this level, driving both traffic and extra-base damage from the top spot. But Pittsburgh brings multiple hitters who match Irvin’s weaknesses. Oneil Cruz (SS) is at .328/.400/.597 with five homers and 16 RBI, extending a double-digit hit streak in this stretch while producing both power and on-base value. Brandon Lowe (2B) has already launched seven home runs with 15 RBI, giving Pittsburgh another high-impact bat against elevated contact, and Bryan Reynolds (OF) adds another middle-order force, coming off a three-hit, four-RBI night in this series. Pittsburgh’s got multiple bats capable of turning Irvin’s pitch-to-contact profile into extra-base damage in the same inning.
Nationals vs. Pirates pick, best bet
CJ Abrams (SS) has finally been scorching for Washington—a true star now—at .356 with a 1.121 OPS, six home runs, and 19 RBI, and he went 3-for-4 with two RBI Tuesday. James Wood (OF) is a huge part of the problem too, sitting at .265 with five home runs, 14 RBI, and a .971 OPS. That gives Washington two legitimate stellar-tinted bats at the top, and that’s before you get to the broader team line of 161 hits and 62 extra-base hits. On the pitching side, Montgomery’s own contact profile leaves room for pain—92.9 mph average exit velocity and 46.7% hard-hit rate. If Abrams and Wood stay hot, Washington has enough top-end force to keep scoring pressure on the game.
Washington has produced more hits and a better team slash, but tonight it is facing the arm whose expected damage is lower than the ugly surface line suggests. Pittsburgh has been the less productive offense overall, but it is walking into the pitcher whose contact profile is the most dangerous on the field. That is why the Pirates’ 16-run ceiling matters more here than Washington’s stronger season slash. Pittsburgh already showed in this series how quickly Cruz, Lowe, and Reynolds can turn lifted contact into a run avalanche, and Tuesday’s loss still included wasted chances rather than a dead offense. Over nine innings, that creates more direct paths to multi-run frames for Pittsburgh than Washington has against Montgomery.
I’d be looking to use this scoring environment in a parlay. I think the best bet here’ll be the Pirates to cover their team total. Right now it’s posted at 4.5 for -145—admittedly, terrible juice—but I’m taking that and including it in parlays for the night.
Best bet: Pirates TT o4.5 (-145) vs. Nationals
