Citizens Bank Park is settling into that early-season sweet spot where the air finally carries. Mid-80s at first pitch, a light breeze, and two lineups that have already traded blows in this series. Both teams sit at 8-9, both have shown they can score in bursts, and the market is still leaning Philadelphia like they’re the cleaner operation. It hasn’t really looked that way through two weeks. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Phillies vs. Cubs prediction, preview
The Cubs are hitting .239/.336/.371 with 83 runs through 17 games, compared to Philadelphia at .233/.315/.382 with 70 runs. Any scoring gap between these two teams exists because of the Cubs’ high-traffic comeback innings. Chicago’s .336 OBP has translated into sustained damage. You saw it Tuesday—15 hits, six walks, and constant pressure on the pitcher. The Phillies can match power, but they haven’t matched base creation, and that matters in a game that could hinge on who strings together two or three quality plate appearances in the same inning.
The Phillies are currently horrendous against left-handed pitching, and they’re facing Shota Imanaga Philadelphia against left-handed pitching: .176/.287/.250, a .537 OPS. It’s a top-to-bottom a structural weakness. Imanaga brings a 2.81 ERA into this spot, and while the contact he allows isn’t always completely leaden, his strikeout rate and command profile have kept innings from spiraling. More importantly, the Phillies’ lineup really just asks you to navigate Schwarber and Harper, then force the rest of the lineup to prove it can beat a lefty. So far this season, it hasn’t.
Host-pitcher Jesús Luzardo (SP) is where the game flips. The 6.23 ERA jumps off the page, but his underlying contact numbers are much cleaner, which is exactly why the market is still pricing Philadelphia as the favorite. His arsenal still leans four-seam/changeup with breaking support, and Chicago has already shown it can stay on that shape when it’s not perfectly located. The path, then, for Chicago is patience. Nico Hoerner (2B) is hitting .303 with an .852 OPS, Carson Kelly (C) is at .333 with an OPS north of .900, and Ian Happ (OF) already has four home runs with a .798 OPS. That group doesn’t need to ambush Luzardo; it needs to extend counts, take walks, and force him into traffic. That’s where his outings have gotten unstable.
Cubs vs. Phillies pick, best bet
Kyle Schwarber (DH) and Bryce Harper (1B) can erase a clean inning with one swing, and Imanaga’s contact profile—90.1 mph average exit velocity, 44.4% hard-hit rate—leaves room for that damage. If Philadelphia jumps him early, this game can flip quickly, especially in this weather. But that threat is concentrated, not constant. Outside of those top bats, the Phillies cannot currently build innings against left-handed pitching, and that’s the difference between a loud moment and a sustainable scoring path.
Over nine innings, the game tilts back toward Chicago’s stability. The Cubs carry the better staff baseline at 3.99 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, compared to Philadelphia at 4.62 and 1.36. They also come in slightly fresher—Colin Rea absorbed six innings Tuesday, while the Phillies’ bullpen had to cover behind a shorter Aaron Nola outing and has been shakier overall. That matters if this game is still tight in the sixth or seventh, which the underlying matchup suggests it will be.
Best bet: Cubs ML (+115), playable to +110. The way it dies is simple: Schwarber or Harper lift one of Imanaga’s mistakes early and Philadelphia plays from ahead, forcing Chicago out of its patient script. But the broader profile—better on-base offense, a cleaner handedness matchup, and the more reliable full-game run-prevention baseline—points the other direction. I make this closer to a coin flip than the current price suggests.
Projected score: Cubs 5, Phillies 4.
Best bet: Cubs (+115) at Phillies
