From 30 teams, the NBA is down to 19 now that the SoFi Play-In Tournament has begun, and one more team will be eliminated tonight. The East’s 7-8 matchup (Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers) and the West’s 9-10 matchup (Golden State Warriors at LA Clippers) will both take place tonight. Bennedict Mathurin 15+ Points (+158): Mathurin was the centerpiece of the deal that sent Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers, and he’s made a big impact in his first 26 games with the Clippers. In that span, he’s averaged 17.4 points per game, and while he hasn’t been very efficient, he’s eclipsed the 15-point mark 17 times. Though his role in the offense has been more inconsistent as of late, his athleticism and aggression are critical for LA, one of the league’s oldest rosters. He has a solid matchup in the Warriors, who rank just 21st in defensive rating since Jimmy Butler III went down on January 19. Golden State has also fouled at an above-average rate as of late, and Mathurin has canned 86.9% of his free throws this season.
Paolo Banchero 1st Points Scorer (+540): If the Magic end up upsetting the 76ers, Banchero will have to be a big reason why. He helped keep the team afloat amid Franz Wagner’s absence, averaging 23.2 points per game since the start of January, and though Wagner is back, Banchero should remain the top scoring option. Among the 183 players who have played at least 35 games since the start of January, Banchero ranks 23rd in first-quarter usage rate, ahead of every player in tonight’s game except for Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey. In his last 10 games, he’s scored the game’s first points once, Orlando’s first points one additional time, and he also missed a three-foot shot that would’ve been the opening score had it gone in. The 76ers have had a below-average defense this season and will be without Joel Embiid.
Kawhi Leonard 1st Points Scorer (+551): Leonard has been on a tear all season, and since James Harden played his final game with the Clippers on January 30th, he’s averaged 28.1 points per game. In that span, he leads the league in first-quarter usage rate among players who have appeared in at least 30 games. Though he hasn’t actually scored the game’s first points in any of his last 10 games, he’s attempted LA’s first shot in four of them. He could be eager to send a message early tonight, given the Clippers’ dire straits.
