For a regular season game in April, Monday had a little bit of everything in the Bronx. The Angels and Yankees combined for 21 total runs, including multi-homer games from Aaron Judge, Mike Trout, and Trent Grisham. It was the latter’s two-run jack in the bottom of the ninth that spurred on a comeback win for New York. Following a brutal defeat, can Los Angeles exact some revenge this evening?
The Yankees are favorites (-186) over the Angels, with the over/under set at nine runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Tuesday’s showdown between Los Angeles and New York on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Angels vs. Yankees prediction, preview
After seemingly snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, the Angels blew away an opportunity to move past .500. Closer Jordan Romano coughed up three earned runs while failing to record an out, culminating in a game-winning wild pitch. On the bright side, LA’s offense looked playoff-caliber, hitting New York pitching en route to ten runs. Leading the charge was Mike Trout, who turned in a throwback performance. The future Hall of Famer recorded his 31st career multi-homer game. Through 16 outings this season, the outfielder is slashing .224/.400/.483 with four dingers and 12 RBIs. While his contact skills have declined, Trout remains one of the game’s better sluggers when healthy.
It’s not just Trout that’s powering a surprisingly good Los Angeles offense. The team is putting up 4.88 runs per game, eighth-most in baseball this season. Fellow hitters Zach Neto (149 wRC+) and Jorge Soler (122 wRC+) have looked sharp so far. It’s not as if this is a fluke, either; the Angels ranked fourth in the majors with 226 total home runs last season. Improved patience at the plate would go a long way for this all-or-nothing offense. The Halos had a .298 on-base percentage in 2025, third-worst in the sport.
The biggest issue, as is usually the case in Anaheim, has come on the mound. Los Angeles is lacking in quality arms, posting the league’s seventh-highest ERA (4.44). With that being said, the club is hopeful that Reid Detmers, tonight’s starter, has turned a corner. The oft-injured left-hander has undeniably good stuff, but injuries and erratic control have made him a difficult watch at times. Through three starts this season, Detmers has notched a 4.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 17 strikeouts. Throughout his career, the 26-year-old has pitched much better at home (4.33 ERA) than on the road (5.31 ERA).
Detmers faces quite the challenge on Tuesday against the Bronx Bombers. New York broke out of a prolonged slump last night, led by the otherworldly Aaron Judge. Despite a bit of a slow start, the three-time MVP remains the best hitter on Earth. Over 16 games, #99 has recorded six home runs and 12 RBIs. He’s joined by a slew of standout batters, including former MVPs Cody Bellinger (95 wRC+) and Giancarlo Stanton (136 wRC+). Last season, the Yankees posted baseball’s best OPS against left-handed pitching (.796).
With that being said, New York has been carried by its pitching for most of the season. Despite a lackluster bullpen, the team’s starters rank among the sport’s best. Tonight, it’ll be offseason acquisition Ryan Weathers on the bump. While his control has been erratic, the righty has undeniable upside. Look no further than his eight-inning, one-run performance last week against the A’s. The sixth-year pro has displayed wipeout stuff throughout his career, including a fastball that can hit triple-digits. That could serve him well against a free-swinging Angels lineup. Los Angeles hitters have struck out 9.82 times per game this season, fourth-most in the league.
Angels vs. Yankees pick, best bet
There’s no clear bullpen edge for either team tonight following Monday’s slugfest. If anything, the Yankees have the slight advantage due to the availability of their closer, David Bednar. Detmers has upside, but any lefty should be on high alert in the Bronx. In comparison, Weathers has yet to allow a home run over three starts. If he keeps the ball inside the park, New York should earn a comfortable victory.
