The MLB regular season is in full swing by now as we approach the one-month mark in the coming weeks. With the league’s pecking order taking shape slowly but surely, some trends are just a blip on the radar while others are more indicative of longer-term results. With the Houston Astros riding an eight-game losing streak, concern is mounting in a major market with plenty of stars. Today, the Colorado Rockies come to town for a rematch of an earlier series.
Here’s a betting prediction and pick for tonight’s Astros vs. Rockies matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Rockies vs. Astros prediction, preview
Colorado Rockies
The Rockies are one of the worst teams in the MLB at 6-10, but three of those wins came against this same Astros group back at Coors Field. Now, the question is whether they can repeat that sweep. It may be an uphill battle though with Colorado averaging only 4.06 runs per game and ranking 22nd in OPS at .674. The team’s slash line of .236/.299/.375 includes one of the worst OBPs in baseball, and their ISO of .137 is just around the league average, and it’s possible that a .309 BABIP means they’ve just gotten lucky to an extent thus far. Yes, 16 homers are respectable and their 17 stolen bases are fourth most, but the Rockies also have the second-highest K% at 27.3% and worst BB/K ratio at 0.26. As for the pitching staff, they’ve been ticking downwards in ERA to 4.27 with a 1.36 WHIP, also sitting 23rd in K-BB% with the third-lowest K% (18.4%).
Houston Astros
The Astros had a nice little winning streak going at one point, but have now dropped eight consecutive games and have sole possession of the MLB’s longest active losing streak. The IL is also racking up new names seemingly by the day with Jeremy Pena sidelined alongside 3/5ths of the starting rotation. The good new is that the bats are still among the MLB’s best, averaging 5.59 runs a game with an .805 OPS that ranks second overall. A .272/.364/.441 slash line is quite impressive, as is a .169 ISO with 19 homers and an MLB-leading 42 extra-base hits. Houston’s 0.60 BB/K ratio also leads the Majors. The other side of things appears bleak, though. Two teams have an ERA above 6.00 and the Astros are one of them at 6.50, good for dead last. They’re also 30th in WHIP at 1.71 and BB% at 14.4%, sitting second-to-last in HR/9 for good measure. It’s practically impossible to win games like this.
Tonight’s starting pitchers
The Rockies send RHP Michael Lorenzen to the mound. It’s been a brutal start in his first season with Colorado, making four appearances with a whopping 8.36 ERA and 2.14 WHIP. While he’s struck out 10 batters in 14.0 IP, Lorenzen has allowed an NL-worst 26 hits and 13 earned runs, sixth most.
For the Astros, LHP Colton Gordon gets the starting nod. He just got called up to the Majors and hasn’t pitched here yet in 2026, but he racked up a 5.34 ERA and 1.42 WHIP last season with 72 punchouts in 86.0 IP. He was elite at limiting walks, but allowed a ton of barrels and had a ninth-percentile ground-ball rate.
Rockies vs. Astros pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Astros as -186 Moneyline favorites. The Rockies are behind at +153 odds to win outright. The run total sits at 8.5 combined runs between these sides.
Best Bet: Michael Lorenzen over 4.5 hits allowed (-139)
Cmon. Lorenzen has a 16.71 H/9 mark right now. Do I even need to convince you to take the over on this one? If you do need a nudge in that direction after all, he’s allowed seven hits in two of his starts and 12 hits in another. The Astros are still crushing baseballs for the most part and are third in AVG at .272. He’s already faced them once this season, going 5.2 innings with seven hits and an earned run allowed, also walking two. I expect him to comfortably clear the over on this line today and I’m also eyeing over 9.5 combined H + BB + ER at +100 odds as well for a slightly better payout.
