Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Washington Nationals prediction, pick for MLB on Monday 4/13/26

Scoring in PNC Park leans quiet when the game asks it to with its current era of pitching staff. The ball does not carry the same way, innings stretch out, and when a frontline arm takes the mound, the pace tends to follow him. Washington arrives at 7-8 off a sweep in Milwaukee, carrying early offensive confidence into a tougher environment, while Pittsburgh sits at 8-8 and hands the ball to Paul Skenes (RHP) in front of a home crowd that expects him to set the tone. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Pirates vs. Nationals prediction, preview

Washington has been productive against right-handed pitching, slashing .254/.321/.407 for a .727 OPS with 89 runs through 15 games, and the early-season approach has improved with a walk rate up near 9.7% and a strikeout rate down around 20.9%. Pittsburgh’s offense has been lighter at .238/.328/.374, but the separation shows up on the run-prevention side: roughly a 3.23 team ERA and .222 opponent average compared to Washington’s 5.51 ERA and .253 opponent average. The shape here is not about which offense is hotter—it is about whether this game stays controlled or opens up.

The mound is where that control comes from. Skenes enters with a 5.25 ERA, but the underlying indicators strip that down to its real form: about a 2.57 xERA, a .259 xwOBA allowed, 85.8 mph average exit velocity, a 31.3% hard-hit rate, and just a 3.1% barrel rate. His last start—6 1/3 innings, two hits, one run, six strikeouts—looked like the version of him those numbers describe, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth. Cade Cavalli (RHP) has a cleaner surface at a 2.51 ERA, but the expected profile is softer, with a .327 xwOBA allowed and more elevated contact. For this bet, though, Cavalli is secondary. More on that later.

Washington’s offense has real kaboom, but it is concentrated. CJ Abrams (SS) has driven the split with a 1.100+ OPS against right-handed pitching, already up to four home runs and 12 RBI in that lane. Second-year phenom James Wood (OF) has pushed his OPS above 1.000 after a slow start, and is hitting .395 against fastballs, which matters directly against Skenes’ profile. Behind them, the lineup is more contact-oriented than explosive, relying on strings rather than one swing. Pittsburgh’s side is similarly top-heavy—Oneil Cruz (SS) enters on an 11-game hitting streak with 20 hits, 13 RBI, and five homers, while Bryan Reynolds (OF) provides steadier on-base work—but this is not a game where either lineup needs to carry the handicap.

Nationals vs. Pirates pick, best bet

A team producing a .727 OPS against right-handed pitching, with improved plate discipline and two left-handed bats capable of punishing velocity, is not one you dismiss. Skenes’ 5.25 ERA shows there has been actual run leakage, and a lefty-heavy construction at the top gives Washington a path to one clean inning. But the underlying shape still tilts the other way. Washington’s damage is concentrated, not sustained, and Skenes’ profile removes the easiest scoring paths—free baserunners and barreled contact. In a park that suppresses carry and a game expected to stay in the low-total range, that matters more than raw split production.

A Pirates first-five side asks for two outcomes—Skenes to control the game and Pittsburgh to convert enough against Cavalli to lead. The cleaner play isolates the part we trust. Nationals first five team total under 1.5 leans directly into Skenes’ contact suppression without asking Pittsburgh’s offense to do extra work in a park that keeps margins tight. It loses if Abrams or Wood connect early or Washington strings together one efficient inning, but the more repeatable script is Skenes dictating the first half of the game.

Best bet: Nationals F5 team total under 1.5. Genuinely feel like this comes down to Skenes against Wood/Abrams twice. I’ll take Captain America to win those.

Projected score: Pirates 4, Nationals 2.

Best bet: Nationals F5 TT u1.5 (-150) at Pirates
