Target Field tightens games when the wrong lineup meets the right arm, and that’s where this one starts. Boston arrives having steadied itself with consecutive series wins, Minnesota sits 9-7 after taking two of three from Toronto, and the matchup runs straight through Garrett Crochet against Bailey Ober. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox.

Minnesota’s production against left-handed pitching sits at .231/.337/.353 (.690 OPS) with just six home runs in 277 plate appearances, and the strikeout layer pushes it further—65 strikeouts, one of the highest totals in the league in that split. The OBP gives them traffic, but the slugging takes away lift. This is a lineup that reaches without consistently advancing, which forces them into multi-event scoring instead of single-swing damage.
That’s exactly where Crochet bends the game. He enters 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.04 WHIP, and the underlying profile backs it: .277 wOBA allowed, .307 xwOBA, 88.0 mph average exit velocity, 35.6% hard-hit rate, 6.7% barrel rate. Those numbers don’t just limit hits—they limit innings from building. His last start (6 1/3 innings, seven strikeouts, two runs allowed) followed that same script: weak contact early, swing-and-miss when needed. Ober’s 5.27 ERA sits on the other side, but his .303 wOBA and .325 xwOBA allowed suggest a pitcher who manages contact, just not always well.
Byron Buxton still carries the only marked one-swing upside, but he’s around .190/.250/.230 vs LHP with a strikeout rate north of 30%, which turns him into a volatility bat rather than a reliable threat. Ryan Jeffers is the most stable power piece, sitting around .260 with .440–.460 slugging vs LHP, but he’s not driving full innings alone. Edouard Julien is down near .190/.300/.280 in the split, and Max Kepler sits sub-.200 with sub-.300 slugging against lefties. That leaves multiple lineup spots carrying sub-.300 OBP or sub-.350 SLG, which kills sequencing. On the other side, Boston’s offense shapes the game without needing to explode—Wilyer Abreu is hitting .340+ with a 1.000+ OPS vs RHP, Willson Contreras sits around .310/.430/.500 (.930 OPS), and Trevor Story just posted a four-hit, two-RBI game as part of back-to-back 10-hit team performances. But Boston is still bottom-third in season OPS overall, with swing-and-miss pockets that keep this from turning into a run trade.
Red Sox vs. Twins pick, best bet
Minnesota’s .337 OBP against lefties means runners will reach, and with a team total sitting at 2.5, one clean inning can flip the entire bet—walk, gap hit, productive out, and suddenly the margin is gone. Buxton can change the game with one swing, Jeffers can follow, and even a contact-heavy inning can scrape together a third run late. Crochet’s numbers are strong, but they are far from untouchable so far. We’re betting on his ceiling, here.
The Twins’ offensive profile does not at all support repeated damage, and Crochet’s profile is built to prevent multi-run clustering. Other shapes on the board ask for more. Boston F5 -0.5 needs Boston to convert early against a pitcher who has historically handled them. Boston team totals ask you to trust an offense that has only just started to wake up. This isolates the most stable edge in the game. Twins team total under 2.5 (+110) leans entirely on Crochet controlling the run environment against a lineup that reaches but does not drive consistently. It loses if Minnesota strings together one efficient inning or Buxton delivers the swing that turns traffic into three runs, but the more repeatable script is baserunners without conversion.
