The young MLB season continues as we turn early blips on the radar into real, meaningful statistical analysis. Pro baseball’s pecking order is coming into focus slowly but surely, giving us more and more data to work with on the betting market. As part of Saturday’s loaded slate with every team in action, the New York Yankees look to bounce back in game two of their road series against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are back at Tropicana Park for the first time in what feels like forever.

Here’s a betting prediction and pick for today’s Yankees vs. Rays matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Yankees vs. Rays prediction, preview

New York Yankees

The Yankees are the only team in the AL East with a winning record heading into the afternoon, but they did just drop three straight games — two to the Athletics prior to yesterday’s loss to the Rays in a 5-3 finish. It’s no reason to panic, however. Despite some of the bats taking a while to heat up (we’re looking at you, Aaron Judge, and your .224 AVG), New York still averages 4.38 runs per game. At some point, it’ll be inevitable that this offense finds its stride. In the meantime, a .648 team OPS and .201/.309/.339 slash line will have to do. A .138 ISO borders on the top 10 and the Yankees have 12 homers in their 13 games, but even without the standout production we saw last season, the arms have more than made up for the slow start. New York’s ERA of 2.50 is second best and its 1.08 WHIP ranks fourth in the MLB. With top-10 marks in both K% and BB%, the K-BB% comes in at 18.0% and sits sixth overall. This staff is playing fantastic ball, hands down.

Tampa Bay Rays

Earlier this week, the Rays played their first game back at Tropicana Field since 2024. At 2-2 in their own park thus far, it’s been a decent first week back at home amidst a 6-7 start to the campaign. Tampa Bay’s offense is doing the vast majority of the work thus far with 4.62 runs per game and some excellent marks at the dish — a .713 OPS ranks seventh thanks to a .255/.331/.381 slash line. Not only have they hit well, but an 0.48 BB/K is good for sixth as well. Sure, the extra-base power hasn’t come around at 22nd in ISO (.126), but 12 homers aren’t bad at all and there are batters doing great work at an individual level. Yandy Diaz leads the team with a 1.065 OPS that ranks fourth in the entire American League. Unfortunately, the Rays’ pitching hasn’t had quite that kind of success on their side of the bargain. A 4.88 ERA is third worst in baseball and a 6.10 FIP is dead last. It’s almost a baffling case since they’re ninth in WHIP at 1.21, but a tendency to give up homers and an MLB-worst 58.2% LOB% is the real issue here.

Tonight’s starting pitchers

The Yankees are set to start star LHP Max Fried for his fourth outing of the year. Over 20.0 IP, he’s thrown to the tune of a 1.35 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with 14 strikeouts. Although he’s not cutting batters down on strikes at a high rate, he’s doing plenty of other things right and didn’t allow a single earned run in either of his first two starts.

For the Rays, RHP Nick Martinez gets the starting nod. He’s tossed two games thus far with a 2.25 ERA and 0.87 WHIP, going 12 innings between the pair with seven punchouts. He did allow a homer in each of those first two games, but has been excellent at forcing ground balls for the most part.

Yankees vs. Rays pick, best bet

DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Yankees as -175 ML favorites on the road. The Rays are behind at +144 odds to win outright. The run total sits at 7.5 combined runs between these sides.

Best Bet: Max Fried under 5.5 hits allowed (-138)

I gave a nod to Fried earlier today in a player props piece with under 5.5 hits allowed as one of my top picks. I’ll echo that selection here by explaining once again that he’s allowed only 10 hits through his first 20 innings of work this season. Sure, the Rays are hitting pretty well and are sixth in AVG, but the star lefty still finds himself in advantageous position here. Tampa Bay is worse against southpaws this year at .248 compared to .257 against righties, a split that’s echoed by last year’s roster which went .234 against lefties and .259 against their counterparts. Fried has allowed five or fewer hits in all three outings of his 2026 so far, so I like him to do so again today.
