Camden Yards gets a clean, crisp April night for a game that sits in the middle of two different truths. Baltimore is back home at 6-6 after sweeping Chicago and has enough lineup thunder to look like the better club on first glance, while San Francisco arrives at 5-8 with a weaker record but a more interesting pitching profile than the price suggests. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and the San Francisco Giants.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Orioles vs. Giants prediction, preview
Roupp’s surface line is a 4.22 ERA, but the underlying shape is much sharper: through 10.2 innings he owns a 31.8 percent strikeout rate, a 6.8 percent walk rate, a 63.0 percent ground-ball rate, and a 1.37 FIP, while Statcast has him at an 82.9 mph average exit velocity allowed, a 29.6 percent hard-hit rate, a .244 wOBA allowed, a .231 xwOBA allowed, and a 0.0 percent barrel rate. Shane Baz has been more volatile underneath his 4.09 ERA. Through 11.0 innings he is sitting on a 19.6 percent strikeout rate, a 6.5 percent walk rate, a 31.3 percent ground-ball rate, a 2.88 FIP but a 4.36 xFIP, and Statcast shows a .340 wOBA allowed, a .285 xwOBA allowed, and a 9.4 percent barrel rate. Roupp has simply been harder to square up, and that is the main reason Baltimore first five never felt like the right tax to pay.
Baltimore still has the louder bats, but the shape of its offense matters here. Taylor Ward has opened at .383/.464/.574 with a .458 wOBA and a 206 wRC+, Gunnar Henderson is at .245/.339/.551 with a .395 wOBA and a 162 wRC+, and Adley Rutschman has given the top third another on-base stabilizer with a .353 OBP and a 123 wRC+. That is the part of the lineup that can beat Roupp. The issue is that Baltimore has been more top-loaded than wave-like so far, and Roupp’s sinker-heavy, ground-ball profile is exactly the kind of starter who can survive if the first four hitters do not stack traffic in the same inning.
Giants vs. Orioles pick, best bet
San Francisco’s offense has been lighter overall, but it is built in a way that can still make Baz work. Luis Arraez is hitting .320/.333/.420 and rarely misses, Matt Chapman has opened at .300/.352/.460, and Willy Adames is at .260/.315/.460. Even with Rafael Devers off to a cooler start, that top four gives the Giants a cleaner contact-and-traffic path than their 5-8 record suggests. Baz’s early-season issue has not been pure loud-contact collapse; it has been a looser run-prevention shape than Roupp’s, with more playable balls in the air and more damage risk when the count gets away from him. That makes San Francisco live enough early that paying Orioles first-five juice becomes more fragile than it looks.
The full-game angle is cleaner because Baltimore’s edge starts to show once this moves past the starters. The Orioles have won three straight, including back-to-back wins over the White Sox on April 7 and April 8, and they did not have to torch the bullpen to get there. San Francisco, meanwhile, used a broader relief chain to finish its April 8 win over Philadelphia, and even within this early sample the Giants have already shown a late-game wobble when leverage innings get messy. If Roupp keeps this tight through five, Baltimore still has the better chance to own the game’s final shape, which is exactly why the moneyline makes more sense than trying to isolate the one window where the Giants’ resistance is strongest.
Best bet: Orioles ML (-125). Baltimore simply needs its top-end bats—Ward, Henderson, Rutschman—to do enough damage against Roupp to hand the game to the deeper overall team by the middle innings. The way it dies is that Roupp keeps the ball on the ground for six-plus innings and turns this into a low-event Giants lead game, but the better full-game ecosystem still points to Baltimore finishing the job at home.
Orioles 5, Giants 3.
Best bet: Orioles (-125) vs. Giants
