The Boys are back, which means even more gruesome, violent deaths are in store for fans in season five. Since its debut back in 2019, this superhero satire hasn’t been shy about offing fan favorites and villains alike. Not only does the Amazon Prime hit have plenty of killing, but characters tend to go out in painful fashion.
Let’s break down every major death and plot development for season five’s premiere, titled “Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite”.

Who died in The Boys Season 5 Episode 1?
It’s season five, and Homelander’s grip on America is stronger than ever. Even actual footage at a rally of the supe letting Flight 37 crash, broadcast via Starlight, was shrugged off as an AI hoax. Still, the world’s most powerful man was left angered by the incident; power has not given him any peace of mind. If anything, it’s made him even more desperate for approval from the masses. Pandering from lackeys such as Deep, Black Noir and now-Vice President Ashley Barrett hasn’t lessened Homelander’s bloodlust in the slightest.
As for The Boys, things are looking quite bleak. Life in Freedom Camps, guarded by Homelander’s super-powered goons, hasn’t been easy for Hughie, Frenchie and Mother’s Milk. To make matters worse, the trio are slated for execution by Homelander and Sister Sage. Luckily, Starlight and Butcher have a plan. They’ve reunited with old friend Kimiko, now living in Manila, in a bid to break out their old friends (and grab a Supe-killing virus).
Butcher’s plan is supported by a tunnel-digging Supe known as The Worm. However, Homelander was able to sniff out the attempt and sets up a trap. A distraction from Starlight allows for most of the group to disperse out of the Freedom Camp. However, Hughie remains held hostage by Homelander, who attempts to kill him for once and for all.
At the last second, Hughie is saved by none other than A-Train. The former member of The Seven, now a member of the resistance, initially opted out of the rescue attempt. However, urged on by his brother, the villain turned hero sacrifices himself to save Hughie, bringing his narrative arc full circle. Following a gruesome murder at the hands of Homelander, A-Train is dead.
What to expect in The Boys Season 5 moving forward
A successful rescue attempt, combined with his constant need for admiration, has made for an angrier, more deranged version of Homelander. His eternal quest to kill Butcher will likely lead to even more dogged commitment towards ending The Boys for once and for all. Will that compromise the Supe’s stranglehold over the nation? It’s certainly possible.
There’s also the matter of the Godolkin virus, as seen on Gen V. Butcher’s win at all costs mentality means sacrificing himself, along with Kimiko and Starlight, in order to end Homelander’s brutal reign of terror. In comparison, Hughie, Frenchie and Mother’s Milk have preached winning without the use of bio-chemical weapons. It’ll be interesting to see how those two approaches clash going forward in the upcoming fight against Homelander.
