New York Yankees vs. Athletics prediction, pick for MLB on Wednesday 4/08/26

The first two games of this series have already told you how thin the margin is—and how quickly it disappears for Oakland. The New York Yankees are 8–2 and have now won games in multiple scripts, including Tuesday’s 5–3 comeback after trailing 3–1. The Oakland Athletics, now 3–7, have been competitive enough to build leads but not stable enough to hold them. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Athletics.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Yankees vs. Athletics prediction, preview

The numbers behind the separation are not subtle. The Yankees’ staff is sitting on a 2.42 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and .199 opponent average, while Oakland’s group is at 5.52 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, and a .273 opponent average. That’s not just worse—it’s structurally unstable. The A’s are allowing baserunners at one of the highest rates on the board, and they’re pairing it with damage contact rather than stranding it. On the offensive side, New York’s .225 average hides a .332 OBP and real power concentration, while Oakland is at .224/.296/.361, meaning less traffic and less ability to string innings together. This is a game where one team builds innings and the other needs isolated swings.

Ben Rice is running a .379/.550/.828 line with a .575 wOBA and 284 wRC+, while Giancarlo Stanton (173 wRC+), Cody Bellinger (152 wRC+), and Aaron Judge (141 wRC+) give the Yankees multiple high-leverage bats every time through. It’s star power and more—it’s on-base plus damage stacked throughout the order. But Oakland’s core can erupt, and New York knows it. Brent Rooker is still carrying a power-first profile with a .200+ ISO baseline, Tyler Soderstrom has already shown early lift with multiple extra-base hits, and Shea Langeliers remains a pull-side power threat who can flip a game with one swing. Nick Kurtz adds another left-handed bat capable of driving mistakes, and that’s the key—this lineup doesn’t need traffic to score, it needs mistakes. The problem is sustainability. Oakland’s team OBP sits under .300, and its run creation leans heavily on isolated damage, while New York’s .330+ OBP keeps innings alive. When Oakland misses, the inning dies; when New York misses, it often just resets the count.

Athletics vs. Yankees pick, best bet

Luis Severino still has whiff ability—10 strikeouts already—and Oakland showed the path Tuesday: build traffic, cash one swing, play from ahead. The issue is what comes with it—eight walks in 8.1 innings and a 1.80 WHIP—which means every inning has leverage baked in. That opens the door for another 2–1 or 3–2 type game if the Yankees don’t convert early chances. And if you’re betting against margin, that’s the entire case: early volatility plus just enough Oakland offense to keep this inside one run.

But zoom out to how this game actually plays over nine innings, and that argument loses weight. Will Warren has been materially cleaner—2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, just two walks in 10 innings—and more importantly, the Yankees don’t need him to dominate, just to stabilize. Once the game moves past the starters, the gap widens quickly. Oakland’s bullpen already has multiple late-game failures, including Tuesday’s four-run eighth from Mark Leiter Jr., and the team-level numbers reflect it. New York, meanwhile, has consistently closed games once it gets even a marginal edge. This is not just a better team—it’s a team that finishes.

Best bet: Yankees -1.5 (-105). This isn’t asking New York to win cleanly from the jump—it’s asking it to be the team that turns a close game into a two-run game, which is exactly what it has been doing. The way it dies is Severino’s swing-and-miss showing up enough to keep Oakland in front or level deep into the game, but the broader script still favors separation.

Final score: Yankees 6, Athletics 3.

Best bet: Yankees -1.5 (-105) vs. Athletics
