The best player in the world is back on clay, the place he loves the most. Alcaraz is the defending champion here in Monte Carlo and is the two-time defending champion at the French Open. The Spaniard has been a dominant force on clay over the past few years and is the worthy favorite here in Monte Carlo. In this round, he faces Tomas Etcheverry.
Alcaraz and Etcheverry have only played against each other once before, and that came all the way back in 2020 on the Challenger Tour. Alcaraz made it into the field as a qualifier at just 17 years old. The future World No. 1 made it through the qualifiers, defeated Tomas Etcheverry in the semifinals and went on to win the tournament. It was the start of Alcaraz’s dominance on clay that has persisted over the next six years.
Carlos Alcaraz should dominate this match against Etcheverry. Alcaraz dominated another Argentine, Sebastian Baez, in the first round. That match finished with a score of 6-1, 6-3. That was an eight-game win margin. Alcaraz should be equally as dominant in this match. He can lose this match by one fewer game and still cover this spread. Plus, this bet is at plus-money. Alcaraz should continue his clay dominance and cover this spread.
Joao Fonseca vs. Matteo Berrettini: Fonseca ML (-146)
Joao Fonseca is one of the rising stars in the sport. He has become a top-40 player in the world at just 19 years old. Fonseca performed well at the Sunshine Double, getting knocked out by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the two tournaments. That is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Fonseca is still relatively unproven, but he has proven he can perform on clay. He pulled off a great upset over Hubert Hurkacz and advanced to the third round at his first-ever French Open last year.
Fonseca got a fortunate matchup against Matteo Berrettini instead of Daniil Medvedev after Berrettini pulled off that big upset. Medvedev basically had a mental breakdown in the middle of the match and was never up for it against Berrettini. Berrettini is the 90th-ranked player in the world and has been mostly uncompetitive over the last couple of years. He has struggled with injuries, including missing out on the Australian Open earlier this year. Fonseca has a much better run of form coming into this tournament and should take care of business here in Monte Carlo as he continues to emerge as a star.
Alexander Bublik vs. Jiri Lehecka: Bublik ML (+104)
This is a great match between World No. 11 Alexander Bublik and World No. 13 Jiri Lehecka. I’m rolling with the Kazakhstani in this Round of 16 match. Lehecka is coming off an incredible run to the Miami Open final, but as Daniil Medvedev will tell you, the clay game is much different than the hardcourt game. Lehecka has never made it past the third round in Monte Carlo before. He has also never made it past the third round at the French Open. Meanwhile, Bublik made a great run to the French Open quarterfinals last year. Bublik got a great two-set win over Gael Monfils in the Round of 32 and should keep that momentum going into this match. Meanwhile, Lehecka has been pushed to three sets in each of his first two matches. Bublik should get the win and move on to the quarterfinals.
