This bet can be found under the “Match Parlays” tab. For the second time in the space of a week, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid will face off. The two sides played each other in La Liga in Madrid on Saturday, and it was Robert Lewandowski who scored the game-winner in the 87th minute for Barca. Now we switch gears to the Champions League, where the stakes are even higher for both teams.
Barcelona have dominated this fixture in recent meetings, aside from one game. In the last six meetings between the teams, they have won five of those, losing one. The one loss was a bad one, as Atlético Madrid beat them 4-0 earlier this season. That game, however, was in Madrid. Barca have won each of their last two home games against Atlético by a combined score of 6-1, and I expect that trend to continue on Wednesday.
Barcelona has arguably been the best home team in Europe this season. They are 15-0-0 at home in La Liga, scoring 47 goals while conceding only eight. In the Champions League, they have won four of five games. The one loss was a respectable one, as they fell 2-1 to the reigning champions PSG earlier this season in the League Phase. Most recently in the Round of 16, they dispatched Newcastle 7-2 at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Atlético Madrid, on the other hand, have been suspect on the road this season, both in La Liga and the Champions League. In their domestic league, they currently hold the seventh-best away record, despite sitting fourth in the league table. In the Champions League, they have only won one of their six away games, losing three and drawing two.
Home field advantage will have a huge effect on this matchup, and with Barcelona at home in the first leg, I like them to get the job done. Three or more goals have been scored in eight of the last nine matches between the teams. In nine of Barcelona’s 10 UCL games this season, at least three goals were scored. In Atlético’s 12 UCL games, three or more goals were scored 11 times.
Barcelona are the better team and they’re at home in this one. Expect them to take a solid advantage into the second leg.
