Victor Wembanyama 1st Points Scorer (+377): Wembanyama has come out of the gates firing in recent games, recording the third-fastest double-double in NBA history on Monday against the Chicago Bulls and backing it up with the fourth-fastest 20-10 game in league history last night against the Golden State Warriors. In the win over the Warriors, he scored the game’s first points. Since March 1 — a span in which his San Antonio Spurs are 15-1 with him on the court — he ranks ninth in first-quarter usage rate among players with 100 or more first-quarter minutes. The fact that he almost always wins the game-opening tip doesn’t hurt, and neither does the LA Clippers’ mediocre interior defense.
Luka Doncic 1st Points Scorer (+462): The player who leads the league in first-quarter usage rate across that same span? None other than Dončić, who just polished off one of the greatest scoring months in NBA history, averaging 37.5 points per game in March. In March, Dončić averaged 13.2 points per game in the opening frame alone — 7.9 more than Wembanyama — and in his 16 contests, he’s scored the game’s opening basket three times (though twice within his last four games). Of course, doing so against the Oklahoma City Thunder’s league-best defense will be a challenge, but in an MVP battle against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Los Angeles Lakers star will surely be motivated to set the tone early.
Jarrett Allen 1st Points Scorer (+600): Allen is more of a long-shot, as he ranks just fourth on the Cleveland Cavaliers in first-quarter usage rate since the Cavaliers acquired James Harden at the trade deadline. However, because of his efficiency (a team-best 75.5% from the field in the first quarter across that span), he actually ranks second on the team in first-quarter scoring, a tick behind Donovan Mitchell. He also scored the game’s first basket in his most recent game against the Lakers, converting a hook shot. Allen has an easy matchup tonight against Golden State, which ranks just 21st in defensive rating since the start of February, allowing 52.0 points in the paint per game across that span.
