The opening days of the 2026 MLB season have been an absolute blast to watch, and as we roll into the second week of action on the diamond, there are plenty of games for fans and bettors alike to choose from.
Tonight, we get an NL West Division showdown between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres. With just one win in six combined games between the two sides to open the season, there’s much work to be done heading into the second series. Hopefully, there are better days on deck for each roster since both hold playoff aspirations. That could start tonight as these rivals square off at Petco Park looking to shake off their slow starts.
Come fight the Monday blues with us! Here’s a betting prediction and pick for tonight’s Giants vs. Padres matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Giants vs. Padres prediction, preview
An opening series against the New York Yankees wasn’t an easy assignment for the Giants, but even with a curve, they still failed the test. Across the three games thus far, they’ve scored a whopping one run. Yep. One lonely little run. That’s by far the MLB’s worst mark as is a slash line of .143/.212/.176 for the entire team. If your OPS begins with a three (and it does at .388, by the way), it’s been a rough week. There’s not a lack of talent by any means, but guys are starting slow with Rafael Devers, Heliot Ramos and Luis Arraez the only batters to record multiple hits. San Francisco also has a paltry walk rate of just 7.1% and a strikeout rate of 27.3% to this point, so the process at the plate hasn’t looked too hot either. Plus, the Giants are the only team without a homer yet. The pitching staff did get unlucky against a tough matchup, but a 1.22 WHIP is respectable and a 4.00 ERA wasn’t necessarily the crux of the team’s issues in the opening slate. There’s room for improvement on both sides of the ball, though.
The story for the Padres was a pretty similar one, though their offense is simply sluggish rather than in a drought. They dropped the opening two games to the Detroit Tigers 8-2 and 5-2 before a 3-0 win to close the series. The Friars mustered a slash line of .204/.271/.330 for an unimpressive OPS of .547, but again, it’s early. Their walk rate of 8.4% and strikeout rate of 23.4% are both marginally better than tonight’s opponent, but it’s worth noting that those numbers may improve even despite losing some key pieces of last year’s team since they were one of the most disciplined lineups in the MLB during the 2025 campaign. San Diego has mashed only one long ball over its first three games, but that’s made more interesting since the lineup ranks eighth in hard contact rate. Looking toward the Padres’ pitching staff, they also have a 4.00 ERA along with a 1.33 WHIP, but have conceded only one home run themselves.
The Giants hand the ball to Landen Roupp tonight. The 27-year-old righty enters his third professional season coming off a 3.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, striking out 102 batters in 106.2 innings of work. He largely limited hard hits last season with 73rd-percentile grades in hard-hit percentage and average exit velocity, and he finished in the 69th percentile in ground ball rate.
The Padres start Walker Buehler tonight, who spent last season with multiple teams. He finished the campaign with a 4.93 ERA and 1.52 WHIP after some serious struggles with the Red Sox, but he did clean things up in a very limited sample of three appearances with the Phillies. Much like Roupp, he limited exit velocity and hard-hit balls, but his ERA hasn’t been much to boast about since the 2024 season, especially after allowing the highest barrel rate of his career in 2025. His strikeouts were also limited with only 92 in 126 innings.
Giants vs. Padres pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Padres as -120 Moneyline favorites at home this evening, though the Giants hold +100 odds to win outright. The run total sits at a combined 8.5.
Best Bet: Walker Buehler over 4.5 hits allowed (-113)
Sure, the Giants have scored one run in three games, but I don’t care. I think this is a game in which the bats can use the matchup to get into a better mindset. Buehler allowed 21 hits in 15 innings during Spring Training and had a 9.29 H/9 last season. His form is shaky at the moment and there’s simply too much talent in this San Francisco order for the group to keep struggling this badly. The Giants are due for positive regression.
Strong Lean: Under 8.5 total runs (-118)
To be fair, neither offense looks great between these two sides. Given that factor, I’m going with the under for the matchup since the power bats aren’t doing much yet and there hasn’t been a ton of hard contact in either direction. Something like 3-2 feels perfectly reasonable for the final score.
