The Boston Red Sox are visiting the Houston Astros on Monday, with first pitch set for 8:10 p.m. ET. Ranger Suarez will take the bump for the Red Sox, facing off against Astros righty Lance McCullers Jr. in Texas. Looking at the odds, lines and Suarez’s strikeouts prop on DraftKings Sportsbook, here is a breakdown of how his Red Sox debut could play out.
Ranger Suarez Strikeouts Prop
DraftKings Sportsbook currently has Suarez’s strikeouts thrown line set at 4.5 for Monday’s contest against the Astros.
The Red Sox shelled out $140 million over five years to snag Suarez from the Phillies in free agency this winter. The lefty is fresh off a 2025 season in which he went 12-8 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.220 WHIP, 151 strikeouts and 4.8 WAR in 26 starts and 157.1 innings. Saurez was a first-time All-Star in 2024, as well. The 30-year-old is coming off a career-high in innings pitched, although he has logged at least 22 appearances in each of the last six non-COVID seasons. He also went from 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings across his first four MLB seasons to an 8.6 mark over his last three.
For what it’s worth, Suarez made three starts in Spring Training. He posted an 11.00 ERA and 1.667 WHIP, notching eight strikeouts in 9.0 innings while giving up three home runs. In two World Baseball Classic starts with Venezuela, Suarez put up an 11.57 ERA and 2.143 WHIP, also giving up two homers in 4.2 innings of work.
Based on FanGraphs‘ Steamer model, Suarez is projected to go 11-9 with a 3.71 ERA and 152 strikeouts across 29 starts and 168.0 innings in 2026. His 3.2 projected fWAR ranks No. 20 among starting pitchers, while his projected 8.04 strikeouts per nine innings ranks No. 129.
Ranger Suarez picks, predictions
Suarez tossed at least five strikeouts in 18 of his 26 starts last season and in 16 of 27 the season before that. Suarez has two career starts against the Astros, both on the road – a one-run, 7.2-inning, seven-strikeout outing last May and a six-run, 3.0-inning, two-strikeout showing in October 2022. In the 2022 World Series, though, Suarez allowed four hits, one walk and zero runs with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings between two appearances.
I’m a little weary of Suarez’s outlook early on this season. Putting too much stock into Spring Training struggles is a classic blunder, but it’s hard to ignore how spotty he looked in March between exhibitions and international play. He also started slow in 2025, when he missed the first month with lower back stiffness then gave up seven earned in 3.2 innings in his season debut. After he got that out of his system, Suarez rattled off 10 straight quality starts.
The Astros had the third-fewest strikeouts in the American League last season. Jose Altuve, Jeremy Pena, Christian Vazquez and Yordan Alvarez all have a career OPS of 1.000 or higher versus Suarez. Now, none of them have more than five at-bats against the lefty, but Christian Walker does have a .909 OPS in 18 career head-to-head at-bats. The top-four of Houston’s lineup – Pena, Altuve, Alvarez and Carlos Correa – are all projected to have strikeout rates below 20% this season.
For Suarez to rack up over 4.5 strikeouts, he will probably have to make it two full turns through the lineup. I’m not confident he can do that given his spotty spring and how he matches up with Houston’s top hitters, so I’m leaning towards the under tonight.
