This slate sets up well for offense, with a few struggling starters and some lineups in great spots to do damage. We’re backing the Red Sox in a strong matchup against Lance McCullers, targeting Ben Rice in a favorable split against Luis Castillo, and fading Walker Buehler after a rough stretch that has carried into this season. Let’s get into the best MLB prop bets on the board.

Red Sox Team Total Over 4.5 runs (+110) vs. Houston Astros

The Red Sox didn’t start the season off as intended, dropping two of three against the Reds this weekend. Tonight seems like a great opportunity for them to get back on track against the Astros and specifically, Lance McCullers Jr. He simply hasn’t been the same since he returned last year after missing all of 2023 and 2024. Through 55.1 innings, McCullers posted a 6.51 ERA with a 5.33 xERA and a 6.3 BB/9. His strikeout stuff is still there, as he averaged over a strikeout per inning, but when hitters made contact, it was loud. According to Statcast, he allowed a ridiculous 49% hard-hit rate and an 11% barrel rate. That hard-hit rate was the third highest in the league amongst pitchers with a minimum of 50 IP.

On paper, this is a brutal matchup for McCullers. He barely throws a fastball anymore and relies upon a slider and sinker as his two main pitches, which he threw a combined 58% last season. The Red Sox expected lineup for tonight hits both of these pitches extremely well. Against the slider, they have a combined .354 wOBA with a .186 ISO and a .337 wOBA with a .134 ISO against the sinker. It could be a short night for McCullers, which would then turn to an Astros bullpen that’s already logged 18.1 innings of work, the most in the league.

Ben Rice 2+ H/R/RBI (+113) vs. Seattle Mariners

The Yankees travel to Seattle to start a series against the Mariners and Luis Castillo tonight. It’s an interesting spot because Castillo is still being priced as an elite pitcher, but, he hasn’t been lately. Last year his 3.54 ERA looked good but his xERA crossed 4 for the second-straight season. It’s not panic mode yet but it certainly seems like the days of peak 2022 Luis Castillo are gone.

For this matchup, I really like Ben Rice to record at least two hits, runs, RBI. Castillo has struggled immensely against lefties the past two seasons, and posted a .352 wOBA with 12 of the 23 home runs allowed and a 4.70 FIP. Rice, hitting cleanup, has some great opportunities in front of him with two lefties and Judge hitting ahead of him. Rice also has great numbers against what Castillo throws, which is a fastball, sinker and slider. At +113, this is a strong value spot.

Walker Buehler Over 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (+119) vs. San Francisco Giants

The Giants completely stumbled in their first series against the Yankees, scoring just one single run. Not great! But, I think I have the solution to their early series woes, which is a matchup against Walker Buehler!

Buehler was dropped by the Red Sox after producing a horrific 5.45 ERA with a 5.89 FIP and a 1.8 HR/9 through 22 starts. He landed with the Phillies for a short while and while he allowed only one run through 13.2 innings, his xFIP of 6.09 says that it should have been much, much worse. Spring Training this season wasn’t kind to Buehler either, as he seemingly picked up where he left off in Boston. Through 15 innings he amassed a 6.60 ERA with a 6.39 FIP. At this rate, his stuff isn’t fooling anyone. For someone who had at least an 11% swing-and-miss rate since 2018, he dropped all the way down to 7.8% last year. I think the Giants regain their offensive form tonight in San Diego.
