First, let’s break down the pitching matchup. We’ve got two electric lefties on the mound to get this contest going.
MacKenzie Gore toes the rubber in his Rangers debut. The 27-year-old was one of the most coveted offseason trade pieces, coming off an All-Star campaign with the Nationals. Once again, it was a tale of two seasons for the former top prospect. In his first 15 starts, Gore put up a 2.89 ERA with a 2.79 FIP and 119 strikeouts in 87.1 innings. Over his last 15 starts, Gore was knocked around to the tune of a 5.72 ERA and 4.89 FIP, striking out only 66 batters over 72.1 innings.
Texas is sure banking on getting first-half Gore. Giving up a 5.52 ERA in spring training doesn’t assuage those fears, but the Rangers will hope that facing a familiar foe in the Phillies helps him get off to a strong start.
His opposite number will be Jesús Luzardo. Armed with some of the best breaking/off-speed pitches in baseball, Luzardo turned in a 3.33 expected ERA in 183.2 innings last season. One of the most mercurial pitchers in the MLB on a start-to-start basis, the good far outweighed the bad for Luzardo in 2025. He finished in MLB’s 92nd percentile for pitching run value. With the departure of Ranger Suárez this offseason, the Phillies will be reliant on Luzardo to punch a lot of tickets this summer.
Both teams had solid — if not unspectacular — lineups this past season. Philadelphia is counting on veterans like Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper to carry the offense. Texas is in the process of moving away from the 2023 World Series-winning core, with Corey Seager as the mainstay in the middle of the lineup. Can youngsters like Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter take the leap to steady their lineup and outfield? Or will Seager have to do it all himself like he did last year?
The bullpen advantage certainly goes to the Phillies, and that was on display Saturday afternoon. The Philadelphia bullpen carried things well after Aaron Nola surrendered three runs in five innings, while the Rangers blew a 3-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Philly’s advantage on the back end certainly plays a role in its favoritism in this game. But can the Phils deliver on that line?
