Connecticut vs. Duke prediction, preview
The Connecticut Huskies won back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2023 and 2024, but were eliminated in the second round of last year’s tournament. They are now three wins away from another title, but will face their toughest test thus far. So far in the tournament, they have beaten No. 15 Furman 82-71, No. 7 UCLA 73-57, and No. 3 Michigan State 67-63. UConn is 32-5 this season, including going 9-3 in Quad 1 matchups and 11-1 when facing Quad 2 opponents. Connecticut has gone 15-22 against the spread, and the game total has remained under in 19 of its 37 games played.
Dan Hurley’s squad leans on its defense for success. It is holding opponents to 65 points per game, which ranks 10th in the country. UConn also ranks 20th in defensive rating, 19th in opponents’ field goal percentage, and 27th in opponents’ three-point percentage. The Huskies are scoring 77.2 points per game, which ranks 144th out of the 365 qualifying DI teams. They also rank 51st in offensive rating, 35th in field goal percentage, and 131st in three-point percentage.
Tarris Reed Jr. leads the team with 14.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Alex Karaban carries his national championship experience, adding 13.4 points and 5.2 rebounds, while shooting 39.3% from beyond the three-point arc. Solo Ball pitches in 13 points per game, while Braylon Mullins and Silas Demary Jr. also average in double figures.
The Duke Blue Devils entered the NCAA Tournament as the top overall seed and have lived up to the hype, even while receiving a scare in the opening round. Through the opening three games, they have defeated No. 16 Siena 71-65, No. 9 TCU 81-58, and No. 5 St. John’s 80-75. Duke enters this game on a 14-game winning streak and with a 35-2 record. The Blue Devils are 19-2 in Quad 1 matchups and 6-0 when facing Quad 2 teams this year, with their two losses coming against North Carolina and Texas Tech. Duke has gone 20-17 against the spread, and the game total has remained under in 24 of its 37 games played.
Jon Scheyer’s squad ranks 51st in the country in scoring by producing 81 points per game. It also ranks sixth in offensive rating, 21st in field goal percentage, and 155th in three-point percentage. Opponents are scoring 63.4 points per game against the Blue Devils, which is the fourth-best rate in the country. Duke also ranks third in defensive rating, eighth in opponents’ field goal percentage, and 35th in opponents’ three-point percentage.
Star freshman Cameron Boozer leads the Blue Devils with 22.4 points, an ACC-leading 10.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Isaiah Evans adds 15.2 points and 3.3 rebounds, Patrick Ngongba II contributes 10.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, and Caleb Foster averages 8.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Ngongba II and Foster battled injury issues late in the season but have made their return to the court.
Connecticut vs. Duke pick, best bet
This is a heavyweight clash between two battle-tested teams. These are two blue bloods who have been at the forefront of college basketball this century, and they’re looking to add to their resumes. Connecticut fought off a strong comeback effort from Michigan State in the previous game, while Duke had to mount a double-digit comeback against St. John’s.
Connecticut lacks some of the top-end talent that its National Championship rosters possessed, but it has overcome this by committing to its identity. Hurley has high expectations and refuses to let this slip. However, there comes a point where the talent level wins out, and that’s going to happen here.
Duke is a dominant team on both sides of the ball and is now back to full strength. It managed without Foster and Ngongba late in the season, but both are healthy now.
The Blue Devils rank in the top six in the country in both offensive and defensive ratings. They also rank 13th in rebounds per game, sixth in opponents’ rebounds allowed, and limit free throws at the second-best rate in the country. For UConn to have a chance to win, it needs to play a low-scoring, defensive game. Duke can still win this way, but this gives the Huskies the best shot at advancing.
Duke hasn’t played a complete game in this NCAA Tournament. But its season sample size proves this team is more than capable of making a title run. The Blue Devils’ margin of error is much greater than the Huskies, giving Duke the advantage in this game.
