Aryna Sabalenka vs. Coco Gauff Preview
This is a fantastic matchup for the Miami Open women’s final. Aryna Sabalenka has been by far the best player in the world over the past several years and looks to continue her reign of dominance with another big title. Sabalenka would be completing the Sunshine Double, having just secured the Indian Wells title a few weeks ago. After struggling in Miami over the years, Sabalenka finally broke through and won her first Miami Open title last year. Now, Sabalenka has a chance to make it back-to-back titles in South Beach. Not only has Sabalenka won every match she has played in the Sunshine Double so far, but she has also been flawless against anybody not named Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka did not drop a set at Indian Wells until the final, which she won in a third-set tiebreak. In Miami, she has yet to drop a set, even in the semifinal against Rybakina.
Coco Gauff has played her best tennis since winning last year’s French Open. Gauff secured her second career Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last year. However, she did not play her best tennis in the second half of last season, until she won the Wuhan Open towards the end of the year. Gauff also didn’t have a great start to this season, getting knocked out of the Australian Open in the fourth round and Indian Wells in the Round of 32. However, she has been wonderful in Miami, defeating Belinda Bencic and Karolina Muchova en route to this final. This will be by far her toughest opponent, but Gauff is up to the task. She has taken down Sabalenka many times in the past, including to win that 2025 French Open title.
Aryna Sabalenka vs. Coco Gauff Pick, Best Bet
Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka have faced off 12 times in the past, with each woman winning six times. However, more recent history favors the World No. 1. Since the start of 2024, Sabalenka is 4-2 against Gauff. The American won that massive Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, but Gauff is a better clay player than Sabalenka. Aryna Sabalenka has won three of their past four hardcourt meetings. That includes their most recent match, at the 2025 WTA Finals.
My best bet is for Aryna Sabalenka to win this match in straight sets. Elena Rybakina is the only player to have challenged Sabalenka so far in 2026. Sabalenka is on a remarkable run, having won 40 straight sets against players not named Elena Rybakina since the start of the new year. She won the Brisbane International, was flawless in the Australian Open until losing to Rybakina in the final, was flawless at Indian Wells before dropping a set in the final and has been flawless so far in Miami. Sabalenka has played 23 tennis matches this year. She has won 21 of them in straight sets, won one of them in three sets and lost one of them. As great as Coco Gauff has played in this tournament, I have no choice but to back Sabalenka to continue that remarkable run of form.
