The Rangers are coming off their second consecutive missed postseason after winning the World Series in 2023. Meanwhile, the Phillies are looking to return to the Fall Classic after three-straight premature October exits, punctuated by last year’s NLDS loss to the eventual champion Dodgers.

Even at 36, Texas ace Nathan Eovaldi’s still got it. The veteran right-hander made 22 starts in 2025, boasting a 1.73 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP and 129 strikeouts (8.9 K/9) across 130 innings. Armed with a disgusting splitter, the two-time World Series champ churns out ground balls and skirts hard contact — ranking in MLB’s 98th percentile in Pitching Run Value.
Behind Eovaldi, Texas has revamped a bullpen that owned the league’s fifth-best ERA (3.62) in 2025. The Rangers signed veteran lefty Jalen Beeks and brought on Rule 5 pick Carter Baumler, among others. Returning rangers, Robert Garcia and Chris Martin, will likely get the early save opportunities for the Rangers.
Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez was so good in 2025 that the organization reworked his contract to give him more money. The 29-year-old lefty carded a 2.50 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and 212 strikeouts (9.4 K/9) across 32 starts (202 innings). He also led all major league pitchers with an 8.0 bWAR, finishing fifth in the National League Cy Young race. Not to be outdone by Eovaldi, Sanchez ranked in the league’s 99th percentile in Pitching Run Value. The sinkerballing southpaw boasted elite strikeout and walk numbers, while avoiding barrels like a high school acquaintance at the grocery store.
Phillies manager Rob Thompson said earlier this week that this is the best bullpen he’s ever managed in Philadelphia. It’s hard to disagree. The franchise added a pair of strong right-handers in Brad Keller and Jonathan Bowlan, bolstering a rock-solid foundation highlighted by flamethrowing closer Jhoan Duran.
Lineup Breakdown
Last season, the Rangers’ elite pitching staff was completely neutralized by a miserable offense. Texas ranked 20th leaguewide in both home runs and wRC+. Corey Seager remains one of the most formidable shortstops to step in the box, and Wyatt Langford provides much-needed power and on-base ability. And flipping Marcus Semien for Brandon Nimmo, a perennial 20-plus home run threat, presents a breath of fresh air at the top of the order. But the rest of the lineup leaves several questions unanswered — especially amid the departure of Adolis Garcia.
It’s only fitting that the former All-Star slugger ended up in Philadelphia. Despite coming off a pair of down seasons, Garcia adds yet another power threat to one of the most dynamic offenses in baseball, one that ranked seventh in wRC+ and led the National League in batting average in 2025. Trea Turner paced the NL with a .304 average, and Kyle Schwarber did the same with 56 home runs — also leading MLB with 132 RBIs. That two-time MVP Bryce Harper is pretty good, too.
Rangers vs. Phillies Pick, Best Bet
Thursday’s Opening Day matchup in Philadelphia presents one of the most exciting pitching duels on the slate: dependable veteran versus budding superstar. Expect both aces to turn in strong performances, but for Philadelphia to have a clear edge in the hitting department. A lineup loaded with Turner, Harper, Schwarber, and Texas’s former star slugger should be too potent — and too compelling a storyline — for the Rangers to keep up. Count on the Phillies to begin 2026 with a victory in front of the raucous home crowd.
